meteroic rise straight to No.1 with their debut single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" the album followed suit even surpassing The Beatles as the fastest-selling debut album ever! Perfectly soundtracking the times the album is a melting pot of jerky angular guitar riffs and frenetic beats whilst remaining fresh and innovative with gnarled poetics and insightful lyrical humour. Recently picking up a Brit Award for 'Best British Breakthrough Act' plus three NME Awards this is already destined to be the album of 2006. This matching songbook features transcrptions of every track for voice guitar tab and bass tab as well as eight pages of exclusive never-before-seen photographs of the band perfoming live.

Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What Im Not confirms Sheffields Arctic Monkeys as the UK undergrounds most proselytising young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretence-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence--"No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets", proffers "Dancefloor"--its an instant, pulse-racing hit. No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View From The Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van", a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station-wagon. Look beyond the Arctics bristly, laddish exterior, however, because its actually affairs of the heart that comprise this albums secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes", bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("Ive seen your frown and its like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection.--Louis Pattison

The media frenzy that has accompanied the Arctic monkey's debut album seems to be almost unbelievable. They have gained the amazing honour of best selling debut album of all time as Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not stormed into the UK album charts yesterday at number one. Coupled with that, two number one singles to date the Arctic Monkeys appear to really have hit the big time. The question is, are they actually any good. The short answer has to be Yes, but it takes a lot more than one short answer to really answer.
The band from Sheffield have been steadily gaining a fan base through internet downloads and fantastic live performances. They did the majority of the work before being signed by Domino and a debut single released in October last year hitting the number one spot straight away. The anticipation for the debut album was already at fever pitch and with 30 odd songs available to be downloaded the bands reputation was increasing rapidly. The four young lads have really stepped up to the big time and despite all the hype surrounding their debut I think it's fair to say Sheffield's new favourite sons have really delivered. Having out sold Oasis's debut album by the middle of the weak and sold more copies than the entire top 20 albums put together it shows that they really have shown the effect of building up that fan base first.
Of course as is only natural the music magazines have picked up on the band and even the national papers comparing them to this band and that. There are influences within their music and that isn't in doubt but my own personal feeling is that they are creating a new evolved sound of their own. There are of course hints of the obvious influences like Oasis and The Beatles but there are less obvious influences with the likes of Leeds rapper Brain Tax and other Hip Hop acts have had a real effect on lead singer Alex Turner's lyrics.
It is musically a very well made album. The majority of the tracks are fast paced Indie tunes that really get the pulse racing and the feet tapping. From the guitars to the bass and onto the Drums there is a consistent sound that the Monkey's seem to be evolving. With a bit of variation between faster tracks and a couple of slower Ballads there is a bit of an eclectic mix to the album. The guitars take the lead on the majority of tracks but it all seems to blend together seamlessly and create a sound that seems almost unique to the band. They also seem to have a rare talent that a number of musicians are missing in the current scene and that's an ability to end a track properly. Rather than just cut them dead the tracks fade out it makes for a better quality of album than the majority of other bands around.
While musically the album sounds fantastic there was the chance it would be let down in the vocal or lyrical departments. This certainly isn't the case; in fact you couldn't get further from the truth. Lead singer Alex Turner has a distinctive Yorkshire accent and it seems to add a certain quality to his vocals that suits tracks like "Fake Tales Of San Francisco". I also felt that from a lyrical point of view this is perhaps the freshest album for a long time. The songs really give you something to think about and Turner has written amazing tracks about such mundane stuff as queuing for a Taxi. It's lyrically one of the most mature albums I've heard in a long time and with the band still incredibly young there is still a huge amount to come from these boys.
With an album that contains 13 tracks it seems amazing that the debut contains no weak tracks but that is certainly my opinion. Although certain tracks will take a few listens to grow on you it really wont take long until the whole album sounds flawless. Of course I'd heard about half the tracks on the album from downloads and it took a little longer to get into a few of the fresher tracks but they blend in nicely with the more familiar tracks and already I think the album of the year is with us.
For me there are a couple of tracks that really stand out. The aforementioned "Fake Tales Of San Francisco" has been a favourite since I first came across the band. It has quite a fast pace and you can really feel that Turner has brought his lyrics to life. I'm also a huge fan of the much slower "Riot Van", a track about underage drinking and copper baiting that seems to sum up the culture in modern Britain. The track is exceptionally well written and Turner's observations ring so true when you think of any town centre on a Friday or Saturday night.
Overall this is an album that if you haven't already got I seriously recommend you give a try. It seems to have something for everyone and even my Mum has taken to it having heard it in my car over the weekend. They are a band that will be around for a while and if they continue to make music like this then they certainly will have the staying power. These first 13 tracks are the tip of the iceberg and with around 30 odd tracks available from the bands website you don't even have to buy the album to see if you like them. I think this will become one of those albums that everyone will have in their CD collection and personally I can't wait to hear more from the band.

Review of Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys
Advantages: Great Songs, Makes me Dance & Smile, Bloody good Lyrics Disadvantages: They are all too young to fancy me. Ho hum.
Let me count the ways. 1 - You are young. Therefore you have energy.
2 - You have that scruffy indie, couldnt give a flip thing going on. You hair is always messy. You wear Fred Perry. You talk utter rubbish in interviews.

Advantages: Big tunes throughout Disadvantages: Nothing specific
The Arctic Monkeys shot to fame in 2006 when the Sheffield-based Indie Rock band released “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” as their debut album. It finds Alex Turner leading the Psychedelic and mildly Funk-inspired band propping up the mid-‘00s re-emergence of British Indie music. 1. “The View From The Afternoon” To get the album going, you see that this one with a lively one which immediately livens up the mood as they attempt to ... ...with their heavy Post-Punk percussion and uniquely-adapted style of creating this progressive stuff. Four Sheffield lads with guitars eh…. Who'd have thought it.
The Arctic Monkeys tale is an intriguing one indeed. Advantages: A great debut album Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!
A phenomenon or a fad? Love them or hate them? Regardless of what you think of the Arctic Monkeys, credit must be given through what they've achieved in such a short time. Personally, I'm all for them - witty lyrics and catchy rhythms make them people-friendly. Just over a year ago I heard about the 'buzz' regarding a track called "Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" that was circulating at the speed of light through the Internet. They playing Reading ... ...smallest stage at the festival, and although I didn't watch them, just passing the tent when they were on showed at least crowds of 12 to 15 rows deep outside the tent, something that was completely unheard of for the Carling stage. At the time, they had no record label, and no single had been released. Exactly one year on, they were sub-headliners to Muse at the same festival this year, have a platinum-selling album and are conquering America - ...

Advantages: The music is quite fun to listen to, great to dance along to. Disadvantages: A couple of filler tracks included here, very dodgy lyrics in parts.
'WhateverPeopleSayIAm, That's WhatI'mNot' is the super successful debut album from the Sheffield based indie band that is the ArcticMonkeys. The album sold over 360 000 copies in its first week of going on sale, it was the fastest selling debut album in the UK since Oasis 'Definitely Maybe' effort in 1994; an incredibly fine achievement for the four lads from Sheffield. Is it actually any good an album though? Well, it's not quite so magnificent as some people would have you believe, it's still a pretty decent debut effort however and if you're looking for a fun indie rock album then 'WhateverPeopleSayIAm, That's WhatI'mNot' is most definitely well worth listening to. The album comes complete with a number of highly infectious indie rock tracks; it's not perfect, but the music is great fun to dance along to nonetheless ...
Advantages: Lyrics, Vocals, Music, Style, The second track Disadvantages: They seemed to have dipped after the album, 1 or 2 poor tracks
ARGH it didn't work ><.
Ok I wrote a really really good review for this last night...like the greatest review you didn't read but I forgot these sites are so dodgy for saving things.
Anyway, despite reviewing the second album by ArcticMonkeys and not being much of a fan of it (Favourite Worse Nightmare, got 3 out of 5 by me), I repeatedly said the band had talent and the album wasn't reflective of their true ability. Despite the odd ArcticMonkeys fan finding my review of FWN as "Off topic" (we won't name names), a lot of people found it very helpful (only time I've had an "Off topic" rating and an "Exceptional" for the same review). As a result of liking whatI'd heard from the ArcticMonkeys debut album, the stupidly titled "WhateverPeopleSayIAmThat's WhatI'mNot", and seeing it in the library I rented it, ripped it to my ...
Advantages: The novelty and truth of the lyrics Disadvantages: Just one weak track that bores me..!
.
Another track with strong riffs and drumbeat. It its one of the better tracks of the album despite being very short. The length does not do the track justice but as they say the best things come in small packages. At a gig I can imagine this song being the one that does get everyone dancing, as it has a certain atmosphere to it that makes you want to get up and move.
~ You Probably Couldn't See For the Lights but You Were Staring Straight At Me ~
2.10 minutes long.
Another short and sweet track from the ArcticMonkeys, but again it is an accurate portrayal of the whole bands talent. The vocals at the end of this song provide a total contrast to the rest of the song. Giving even more proof this band have a unique talent.
~ Still Take You Home ~
2.53 minutes long.
A constantly brilliant track describing a night out and a typical, well ...
