Album Notes: Released in 1995, well over 30 years after Glasgow-born acoustic guitarist Bert Jansch set the British folk and blues scene aflame with his skilled playing and expressive vocals, WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN shows that Jansch was arguably playing better than ever. Through numerous solo albums and a long partnership with fellow guitarist John Renbourn (which included several group albums as the Pentangle, with singer Jacqui McShee and bassist Danny Thompson), Jansch had added American country and jazz influences and a strong undercurrent of Indian and North African drones to his folk and blues-based music. All of these sounds intermingle throughout WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN, so that even a simple blues like \"Honey, Don't You Understand\" sounds more complex upon closer listening. A deeply satisfying album.
Album Reviews: Dirty Linen (4-5/96, p.55) - \"...a blend of blues, early jazz, and English folk served up through a gruff, world-weary Glasgow voice, backed by the liquid guitar that has long made him one of the U.K.'s best acoustic instrumentalists...\"
Advantages: Good cross section of artist work Disadvantages: not to everyones tastes
...A cracking album from one of the u.k top folk artists. This album shows a true cross section of work from Bert's repertoire. Personally, i like every track on the album and as a fellow musician Bert's arrangements are exceptionally good and complex! There are the traditional tracks like "Black waterside" (Led Zeplin used Bert's arrangement for one of their own tracks,) aswell as reading of "Nottamun Town" and the murder ballad "Bruton Town."
If you like your english folk music then you can't go wrong with one of the best examples of folk guitar. This album is a mixture of self-penned songs, trad folk and examples of the tunes that were taken into his band The Pentangle.
I have been a fan of Bert's for years and this album is one of the best examples of his career spanning the last 40 yrs....

...The first album was recorded in less than 30 hours just a few weeks after Led Zep's formation.
This album contains a old song named "Dazed & Confused" which starts of as a ballad blues number and becomes fused with metal riffs, a classic song. "Dazed & Confused" and "How Many More Times" were leftovers from Page's last days with the Yardbirds. "Good Times Bad Times" combines funk with rock and was created alongside "Communications Breakdown" from their initial rehearsals. "Black Mountain Side" was based on folk guitarist BertJansch's Black Water Side. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" starts of as a ballad but progresses into a heavy rock track ,they were before their time on this one and the ending sounds like Bohemian Rhapsody. This number was borrowed from a Joan Baez album. "You Shook Me" is a classic blues cover of a Willie Dixon & JB...

Advantages: Memories of christmas past and thought of Christmas future. Disadvantages: None
...tratidional with God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and The King Singers carol While Shepherds Watched. Stacie Orrico calls to us all (O come all Ye Faithful) and the Weavers Wish you a Merry Christmas. The Spinners sing the Twelve Days of Christmas and Jethro Tull (what's he doing here?) Rings Out Solstice Bells. Steeleye Span sing Gaudete and BertJansch In The Bleak Midvinter. Sinead O'Conner sings Silent Night and Norah Jones sings about Peace. Then we have Michael Andrews & Gary Jules telling us of a Mad World. Bing Crosby and David Bower sings together about Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy and we end this cd with the same voice we started as Cliff Richard sings The Millennium Prayer.
***Where would I play this?***
Cd one would go down well at the office Christmas Party, with people either singing along or sighing "Oh this one was terrible...
