well known and the unknown contribute funny, moving, magical and occasionally dark childhood memories. From Michael Palin’s memory of seaside holidays with his dad and Seamus Heaney’s evocation of a crashed Cadbury’s chocolate van (‘a trail of silver papers up the road’) to the institutional upbringing of the mixed-race child of a black GI in the 1950s and a typical rural childhood in the Scottish highlands, it is full of evocative memories. And woven into the mix is a rich selection of quotation and fifty more of John Burningham’s witty and poignant drawings.

Advantages: Every track is awesome, very unique Disadvantages: Some of the songs take a while to grow on you
...great lyrics and music loops. When I hear albums with opening tracks as good as this I want to listen on, the disadvantage to a good opener is that the rest of the album has expectations to meet!

Like a lot of his music, a lot of the songs on this album are about serious issues, some controversial. What better than a Welsh electro rapper.... well if you can call him that. Akira (born Adam Narkiewicz) is an independent rapper of Welsh upbringing. Formerly of underground rap group 'Crack Village', his debut album "When We Were Young" is a breath of fresh air amongst todays rap artists. Combining electro, rap and rock (amongst others), this album is very different to anything I had heard before.
The album opener (track 2 because track 1 is a speech) "Liverpool" is a great track to open an album with. It's upbeat, catchy and has some great lyrics and music loops. When I hear albums with opening tracks as good as this I want to listen on, the disadvantage to a good opener is that the rest of the album has expectations to meet!
Luckily, in this case, every track on the album is pretty good. Some of the tracks I didn't like the first time I heard them, but they grew on me, and now there is no track I don't like. My favourite track has to be "Oh! (What A Glorious Thing)" (track 3) because it is upbeat, happy, and puts me in a good mood everytime I listen to it.
Like a lot of his music, a lot of the songs on this album are about serious issues, some controversial. "1 2 3 4 5 6 7" is about religion - in particular Christianity, the song "Dead Babies" is about abortion. Due to these controversial lyrics, especially the ones found in "Thanks For All The AIDs" lead to Interscope (the record label) deciding they weren't going to release the album because it was too politically sensitive. Due to this, Akira decided to leave Interscope and had British independent record label 'Something In Construction' to release the album (as well as future releases).
All the tracks on this album are catchy, and I cannot get enough of them. I have had this album on repeat a lot, and will listen to it three or four times through before changing the CD. If you want something to have a good listen to, then the lyrics in most the songs really make you think, but if you just want some music to chill out to, then having this on in the background works too.
As a debut release, I think it is pretty good. There are improvements to be made in the music and perhaps the structure of some songs, but overall I am very impressed and strongly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of rap/hip-hop or just likes something a bit different.
