I personally like the playful tone, the soaring strings in the chorus and the way the tune melts away into rhodes noodling at the end.

So the big question is: how does "When It Falls" compare to the 1st album "Simple Things"?

"When It Falls" was released in 2004 and is Zero 7's 2nd album. The overall sound appears to be a gentle continuation of their 1st album "Simple Things" - more mellow, jazzy, downtempo tunes mostly with guest vocals (2 tracks are just instrumentals). Rhodes, strings and acoustic guitars feature frequently with electronic sound fx in the background.
The album kicks off with "Warm Sound". Just like the 1st album, vocals are sung by Mozez and this is one of my favourite tracks. The intro consists of a piano sample and the sound of a phone ringing in the background, before a gentle synth bass and soft beat kick in with rhodes and the vocals. The chorus lyrics "Warm sound, falling slowly, takes the time away from me" do their best do lull you into chillout mode. The melody gradually develops into a beautiful sound of uplifting strings, flute and acoustic guitar which works well. I really do get the feeling of warm sound washing over me as the track builds up and all the elements combine into a harmonious whole.
The next track "Home" does not disappoint either and features a new guest singer Tina Dico who has a great voice. The track starts off in a very intimate manner with minimal instrumentation to accentuate the vocals and lyrics "Take me somewhere we can be alone, make me somewhere I can call a home, 'cause lately I've been losing my own". The track then builds into a crescendo with blaring brass and more energetic drumming before fading away into acoustic guitar and electronic fx.
"Somersault" is the 3rd track and is likely to polarise opinion due to distinctive sound of Sia Furler's vocals and the childish lyrics which may be too saccharine to bear for some:
"You're the prince to my ballerina You feed other people's parking meters You encourage the eating of ice cream You would somersault in sand with me
You talk to loners, you ask how's your week You give love to all and give love to me You're obsessed with hiding the sticks and stones When I feel the unknown You feel like home, you feel like home"
I personally like the playful tone, the soaring strings in the chorus and the way the tune melts away into rhodes noodling at the end.
Another album highlight for me is the instrumental "Look Up" which does not feel out of place next to the vocal tracks. It does feature a female voice going "Dah-ah-ah-ah" towards the end but there is no singing and no lyrics (I personally deem the voice to be completely unnecessary but I suppose you can't have everything). This track is the most uptempo tune on the album and provides a welcome relief from the slower tracks, injecting much needed energy and variety. The melody played by the strings and acoustic guitar is engaging and when the sunny harmonica kicks in, it just gets better.
So the big question is: how does "When It Falls" compare to the 1st album "Simple Things"? Well there is more consistency and more vocal tracks which is good. On the downside though, the incredible ambient soundscapes (for example in "Destiny" in the 1st album) are gone. The fusion of instruments, electronic sounds and background tinkering in "Simple Things" combined to give a smooth and somehow natural sounding whole. The electronic fx in "When It Falls" are less subtle, sounding harsher and more in-your-face - not my personal preference. I can't really choose between the 2 albums because they are equally as good and each contains great tracks. If you liked the 1st album you should like their 2nd effort.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in jazzy, chillout tunes.
Advantages: More of the same genious Disadvantages: More of the same genious...
...present light drum movements and when the chords are supplied, heaven. This is what heaven is like...in music.
Possibly the most inspirational tune of all time comes after. There is not enough time to soak up the perfect radiance the first track has made before you are hit with another fabulous triumph of musical engineering. 'Home' takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride, much like all the tracks featured. All simply give you that 'hair-standing-on-back-of-neck' ... ...could really give this album the distinct justice and respect it deserves.
Surprisingly I found that the title track for the ablum called 'when it falls' was not my favourite, but I'm definitely not saying I dislike it. It just proves the point that every song has been made with care and love to make a collection of brilliant medleys.
I have just figured out what the only problem with the album is, we just want more! I could listen to them all ...

Advantages: Outstanding melody and lyrics, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable. Disadvantages: None.
...both are exceptionally good, but When It Falls has a special place in my music collection, and I still listen to this album very regularly.
It is great background music, very relaxing and chilled out. I can't think if a better album to sit back in the evening and relax with (glass of red wine advised, but optional). Both female and male vocals are simply brilliant, resulting in a variety of sound and melody. Having heard more by zero 7, including ... ...Late Night, the ever changing sound and style of their music is outstanding, whilst maintaining a unique quality through out.
Every track of this album can stand alone, but it still flows together nicely, Starting with 'warm sound', the theme is set right away, and you find yourrself sinking back into your chair in no time. 'Home' follows, with female vocals rather than male, and after that my favourite track on the album 'Somersault'. The lyrics ...

Advantages: Chilled out stress buster of a cd Disadvantages: Bit samey and not a big progression from Simple Things
...way into anyone's overstressed soul. When It Falls is more of the same. That is simultaneously a good thing and a bad thing.
The good thing is that its the ideal tonic for a hard day's work or after a heavy night out. It's perfect to help lower those blood pressures and the tunes just help you get to that point of drowsiness that you can drift off into the ultimate sleep.
However, you kind of expect more from a group like Zero 7. Simple Things ... ...and melodies was perfect. With When It Falls, they've gone more along the song route and less of the instrumentals. Not that bad a thing, but it's not as easy a blend as before. Another thing is the fact that not one song on the new album stands out. With the possible exception of Home, they're all much the same and nothing really leaps out and says "I'm an excellent track". In Simple Things, there was a plethora of stand-out tracks. Destiny and ...

...album constantly in the office when it first came out. I would always ask "who is this again" much to my collegues annoyance. so I snapped up this album when i saw it promo'd in HMV. When I put it on the CD player at home I was immediately happy, the sound seems to fill the room with a gentle and relaxed feeling like warm golden sunlight.
I find it a massive improvement on their previous release (which is still a classic favourite). What i love ... ...that floats through many of the tracks. The joy is that the album is not just a collection of goood tracks but is a complete flow from beginning to end.
If you love gentle music the lifts your spirits or melodic jazzy tunes then this is a must for your collection. My only bug bear is that as with typical Sony releases the CD has hideous copy protection!!!! This really annoys as i would love to drift to these tunes on my ipod if i could only rip ...

...relax the most tense people. When Zero7 released their first album Simple Things it’s chilled out mood was fashionable, with artists such as Air and Lemon Jelly paving the way for other artists. Advantages: Absolute pure gold!!! Disadvantages: Theres only 6 tracks :-(
Most people are probobly asking who is Tina Dico? She is, as of yet virtually unheard of. Some people may recognise her vocal talents from the Zero7 album "WhenItFalls", which is a fantastic album in itself! But this mini album displays Tinas abilities much better than the tracks she features on the Zero7 album. Her angelic voice is well suited to her style of pop/folk that she displays on this album and is probobly one of the easyest albums ive listened to in ages. Quite often we buy cds and skip through tracks we dont like the sound of, but each track on this album is unmissable, you wont want to skip ahead!
As i listen to her album I always imagine myself somewhere else, its great for just lying on your bed and forgetting about everything else.
I find it difficult to name artists that may be similar to her, since she has ...

Advantages: Two or three very good tracks. Disadvantages: Most of the tracks are nothing to write home about.
Another Late Night seems to be a lesser know release of zero7's, which is not good for a band who are generally not that well known to begin with! I can understand why, however, as this is not like other zero7 albums so is perhaps ignored to some extent even by fans of the group. Enjoying the likes of Simple Things, WhenItFalls and/or The Garden are unfortunately not enough for me to recommend this to you; although I guess it might help to a little. Although mixed by zero7 this does not contain their unique 'sound' which fans of the group will notice right away. This is, however, a relatively chilled out and relaxed album which is well produced, making for great background music and perhaps a couple of quite upbeat tracks which are very good, although not of typical zero7 style. Overall this album gets 3 stars from me, although ...

absolutely love Zero7, who has released two albums of their own material called 'Simple Things' and 'WhenitFalls', plus some compilation albums including the late night series. One of the members of Zero7 releases his own material under the name 'Fragile State' and when my brother bought me this CD, I had high expectations for it. The track listing is as follows;
1. Venice Beach - The Egg
2. Best Days of Our Lives - Rachel Foster
3. Bubble Love
4. Get Misunderstood [Album Mix] - Troublemakers
5. Soul for Your Soul
6. Eponymous - Echo & the Bunnymen
7. Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes - Thievery Corporation
8. Keep You Kimi - Yukimi Nagano
9. Wesley Music - Audrey Hermitt
10. Pablo's Blues
11. U Bring Me Vibes [Original Mix] - Amp Fiddler
