One of my all time favourite CDs, I've listened to this album countless times and recommended zero7 to many-a-friend telling them to start with 'When It Falls'. Easily 5 stars in my opinion.
Other reviews have mentioned it being as good, or almost as good as their earlier release 'Simple Things'. I'm of a slightly different view point as I stumbled across this album first, hearing zero 7 mentioned in passing, I thought I'd try it out. It absolutely blew me away; subsequently, after going back to listen to Simple Things, I still prefer this. Don't get me wrong, both are exceptionally good, but When It Falls has a special place in my music collection, and I still listen to this album very regularly.
It is great background music, very relaxing and chilled out. I can't think if a better album to sit back in the evening and relax with (glass of red wine advised, but optional). Both female and male vocals are simply brilliant, resulting in a variety of sound and melody. Having heard more by zero 7, including the latest release The Garden, and a mixed album Another Late Night, the ever changing sound and style of their music is outstanding, whilst maintaining a unique quality through out.
Every track of this album can stand alone, but it still flows together nicely, Starting with 'warm sound', the theme is set right away, and you find yourrself sinking back into your chair in no time. 'Home' follows, with female vocals rather than male, and after that my favourite track on the album 'Somersault'. The lyrics to this intriguingly simple track are particularly wonderful.
Other stand out tracks are 'Passing By' and 'In Time', both are very special, with outstanding melody and lyrics. This is an album where you will not have to use the skip button, but these tracks still stand out. The title track is, perhaps strangely, the only instrumental track on the album. It sounds great but tends to get passed by without thought, blending into the tracks before and after it.
I can't find fault with this album, and subsequently couldn't not recommend it to anyone in particular. If in the right mood I can't think why anyone would not fall in love with this CD.
If you like to listen to chilled out music once in a while, or want something you can leave on in the background and really enjoy, you can't go much wrong with this. I think The Garden and Simple Things are quite similar, although the garden is perhaps a little more querky. If you like either of those albums by zero 7 then this is a must! If you're looking for something slightly more upbeat by zero 7, Another Late Night is also a great album.
