At Christmastime of 1959, three Louisiana children discover a man with bloody hands and ... more
feet. Is he Jesus Christ, or is he the convicted murderer reportedly on the loose? This searing question is the basis ofWhistle Down the Wind, Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-awaited new musical, and fans will find it worth the wait. A study of the faith of children contrasted with the caution and fear of adults, the story was adapted from a novel by Mary Hayley Bell and a 1961 film produced by Richard Attenborough, but its setting was transferred from northern England to the American South, giving Lloyd Webber a good excuse to indulge in rock&roll and gospel. Of course, he provides his usual supply of catchy melodies, including the rousing "Vaults of Heaven", the tender title tune, and the peppy children's number "When Children Rule the World". Long time listeners will also recognize elements from earlier shows--the opening-scene anthem (Aspects of Love), the anguished potential saviour (Jesus Christ Superstar), the climactic manhunt (Phantom of the Opera)--leading to a final collision of musical themes and overheated emotions.Whistle Down the Windstumbled in its 1996 Washington, D.C. run and never made it to Broadway, but is realized here by its 1998 London cast, including Marcus Lovett as the mysterious man, Lottie Mayor as his most ardent believer, Dean Collinson as a James Dean wannabe, and Veronica Hart as Collinson's black girlfriend. The major drawback to this relatively unknown but solid cast is its anomalistic British accents or awkward attempts at American Southern ones. Listeners might have to use their imagination to fill in the story, as the libretto includes all the lyrics and dialogue, but no indications of song titles or track numbers, no stage directions, and no synopsis.--David Horiuchi

The book was written by Mary Hayley Bell and the original film starred Hayley Mills. The film was set in this country in the industrial north but the musical is set in deep south of America.
The story is about a motherless family, the eldest of whom - Swallow, finds a strange man in the barn. She asks him who he is and his reply "Jesus Christ" shocks her. The wounds on his feet lead her and the other children to believe this man is Christ who has come back and he begs them to hide him. Naturally they do and the music then follows the story with some very powerful music.
The local bad boy is about to flee north with his black girlfriend - shock horror in the south in those days. But really he fancies Swallow. Swallow growing up without her mum is vulnerable to any soft soap. Her young brother 'Poor baby' is just rebellious because they are poor. They manage to enlist all the children to their aid in the mighty task of hiding 'the man'. In the midst of all this the gospel preachers enter with live snakes and invite the community to test their faith in God. Despite what you may think it is not glitchy or sweety sweety, it is a great musical and fab music. There is also a bit of romance, which comes across through the music, a bit of the eternal triangle, some racism and the local bad boy trying to seduce Swallow through his song of love. All this while his black girlfriend Candy stands waiting to run away with him. The song Whistle down the Wind is sung hauntingly several times. I defy you to hear it and not sing or whistle it. There is funny songs, sad songs, good ole rock 'n roll so you can tell there is something for everyone here.
