Hello, so what do you want to know? I'm a northerner living in London, because that's where it's supposedly all happening. I enjoy music, comedy and going out to gigs in my spare time.

I bet there are a few people who have been given David Gray's White Ladder for Christmas, when they actually wanted Craig David, poor things, I don't know which is worse.
In 1999 I rented the video, "This Years Love", it's an ok film set in Camden. It's got some good actors/actresses in it like, Kathy Burke and Ian Hart, unfortunately it also has David Gray in it. The soundtrack for the film takes songs from this album, which has only just been succesfullly promoted. No one can explain to me the David Gray phenomenon, that is how such "a dull as ditchwater" singer/songwriter, who was dropped by his last record label because he didn't sell, has suddenly managed to start shifting units.
I've come across him a few times at gigs, and those who know him tell me he's a bit of an egotist. I've even had the "pleasure" in 1999 of being backstage with his support band and being told that everyone had to get out whilst he came in and changed his "shirt". I was told that was typical of his behaviour and that he was hell to tour with, because he was so pretentious. You have to bear in mind hardly anyone had heard of him at the time.
Perhaps this makes me biased when I come to reviewing this album, I don't know. But I found the album void of anything interesting. Certainly now that Gray is "popular" I find the constant playing of tracks "Babylon" and "Please Forgive" on the radio have me switching for the off button. But if you don't find them irritating after the 50th time, then you'll enjoy the album, because that's all it is.

This op seems to be more an anti-David Gray rant than a review of the album. Admittedly, he's not my favorite musician, but there's no denying that Babylon and Please Forgive Me are great songs. Anyway, after a decade of slogging it out in clubs with zero recognision, surely he deserves some glory?

Marry me.
Just think of the music collection we'd have.
My only gripe is that you didn't go on for long enough about what an atrocity this album is - I don't know about his head twitching but if someone'd bring it to me on a plate I'd pay them handsomely...

Advantages: A wonderfully soulful voice and genuine talent amid a sea of manufactured pap. Disadvantages: It tends to sound a bit too similar at times.

Review of White Ladder - David Gray
Advantages: Wide range of music; some truly great tracks; consistently high quality Disadvantages: Very few, perhaps only that it is very slighty shorter than previous albums
