David Gray is thirtysomething singer-songwriter, whose fourth album, White Ladder, which has gone five times platinum in Ireland, is an affecting mix of gentle folkiness, windswept balladry and heartfelt lyrics. After a variety of record company wrangles, this album was finally released on Dave Matthews’ IHT label in Ireland and then on East West in Britain. It managed before this to sell 20,000 copies in the UK without any marketing or airplay and it is undoubtedly his best work yet. Gray’s voice sounds variously like a young Van Morrison or Bob Dylan, and his songs are moving tales of longing and whimsy, which are complimented by collaborator Clune’s gentle electronic-driven production. Themes centre around the magic of love, loss and yearning and Gray’s bittersweet voice is a joy to behold.
The Please Forgive Me single has been played on various radio stations and Gray could well emulate his Irish success over here in the UK, and increase his devotional and keen following.

Advantages: Wide range of music; some truly great tracks; consistently high quality Disadvantages: Very few, perhaps only that it is very slighty shorter than previous albums
