Please forgive me if I act a little strange, For I know not what I did.
I first heard about David Gray earlier this year when he signed with ATO records, which is partially owned by Dave Matthews (I heard through an announcement on the Dave Matthews Band announcement list I subscribe to). I didn't give David Gray much of a shot though. I kind of skimmed the email and deleted it....sending David to the place deleted email goes. Fast forward to earlier this summer. When I discovered that David Gray was going to be opening for the Dave Matthews Band concert I am going to this summer, I immediately decided I must give poor David a listen. I'm sorry I sent David into deleted email world.
Please Forgive Me A constant drum beat and piano chords drive the disc's opening track. Accompanied by just the right amount of guitar and strings, you'll find yourself tapping your toes along with the beat.
Babylon A slower song than the first track. Again, it's accompanied by a steady
drum beat, piano chords and just the right amount of guitar. I like the lyrics in this song. One of my favorites is, "Let go of your heart, Let go of your head." It seems like the lyrics are depressing, yet the beat and the song are kind of upbeat. Give this track a listen to.
My Oh My This track takes on a different character than the opening two tracks. A darker mood is this songs defining characteristic. Lyrics that speak about a man who is confused about his life, what's going on, and where exactly his life is heading.
We're Not Right Beginning with vocals by Gray accompanied by a simple strumming pattern on an acoustic guitar, a somber mood is established right away. Beautiful lyrics accompanied by unique music. A must listen to.
Nightblindness This isn't one of my favorite tracks on the cd. It still has good lyrics though. I like the chorus the best in this song. It tends to drag on a bit for me.
Silver Lining Again, another song that isn't my favorite. It's definitely worth listening to though. In the middle it has this instrumental part that almost seems space age like. If anything, give it a listen to for this small instrumental alone.
White Ladder The title track of the cd. It's driven by a strong constant drum beat. It also has kind of a unique sound, because in the background, you can hear static, almost like the kind of static you would hear if you were playing this cd on a record player. One of my favorite parts is when David goes, "There's no rhyme or reason to love" He takes on this kind of whiny/howly sound. A good song, one of my favorites.
This Year's Love A ballad. Just David,a piano and a touch of strings. Beautiful, heartfelt lyrics. If I had to chose a favorite lyric, it would be a tough choice, but I think it would have to be, "Turning circles, time again, cuts like a knife." One of my favorite songs on this disc.
Sail Away Another slow song. I like the music and the lyrics in this song. My favorite lyric is "For all the times I've tasted love, I never knew what I had." Although the entire song is fun to sing along to once you know the lyrics, the chorus is my favorite part to just belt out when I'm driving along in the car.
Say Hello Wave Goodbye Again, this is one of my favorite songs on this disc. Simple music accompanies David's remarkable lyrics. About two lovers who care about each other, but are just too different for it to work. I think Gray sums it up best when he says "You and I had to be, the standing joke of the year." Say Hello, Wave Goodbye is an excellent example of just how much emotion David Gray puts into his music. Don't miss this song!
Babylon II A nice upbeat tune to close the disc. A reprise of Babylon, which appeared earlier on the disc. Sounds pretty much the same as the original, yet with some changes.
Overall, this is a good album. It might be a bit hard to find since it is released on a small record label, but I promise you, it'll be worth the effort to find this a lbum.

Advantages: Wide range of music; some truly great tracks; consistently high quality Disadvantages: Very few, perhaps only that it is very slighty shorter than previous albums
