With their third full length release Deftones are continuing on a path to being the most important of the alternative metal bands in the business. White Pony simply encourages this trend with its crest of musical maturity.

White Pony opens with a burst of passion unyielding throughout the record. Chino Moreno's squeals and moans are counterbalanced by an intense anthemic guitar-laden approach. The difference with the Deftones, compared to their commercial rivals, is an apparent seasoned knowledge of the limits of experimentation and a love for all that is grand about great alternative metal.

Track five, "Street Carp," soars above the rest for its hook meets studio gadgetry infectiousness. Dipping into virtually every genre associated with alternative rock's recent history there are equal parts of industrial, metal and hip-hop in the never ending stew.

The next tune, "Teenager," is almost too precious with a navel-gazing approach. In fact, the song was originally written for Chino's side project Team Sleep but made its way onto this album with a slight change to give it that 'Deftones' touch. By "Korea," the guys have again hit their mark, chugging and soaring with undeniable class. The thoughtfully intense "Passenger" features vocal guest Maynard James Kennan of Tool fame. in my opinion, you couldnt match up a better pair.

"Change (in the house of flies)" is probably one of the nicest tunes you may ever hear. Its slow powerful melody will draw you in to the whole album.

This album, i would have to say, is a masterpiece by Deftones. Being slightly more melodic and less heavey it is sure to attract many new Deftones fans and even those original fans will not be dissapointed.
