As many of you now, this is CD Crackdown month a craigy2040’s and no that doesn’t mean I am selling all my cool CD’s, I am busy writing ops on most of them! So far we have had Eva, Anastacia and Groove Armada. There are still plenty to come, so watch this space! Today I have chosen to write an op on Beverly Knight. She recently released to great records, got nominated for Mobo’s and has been busy promoting her new album.
So what is so special about this album? Well firstly it is so cool! It has some really feel good tracks. It also has some more chilled tracks that are worth listening to as well. Overall it is worth getting. If you need more persuasion, then read on:
1. GET UP! – What a wicked track to open with! The song starts well, there are cool drums and Beverly Knight sings little things over it all. The song sounds so good, it is so upbeat and positive. The mixture of her sweet voice, drums and guitar. They mix so well and sound amazing. She ‘shouts’ when she sings, but it sounds good, it has a really positive vibe about it. 5/5
2. SHOULDA WOULDA COULDA – This is a step down from the upbeat ‘Get Up’. It is still quite jiggy, but it on a different level. This song is supported by really
strong lyrics and her voice sounds really good. It is so smooth, so ready, and so perfect. The song is great, a steady pace with a cool beat. 5/5
3. SHAPE OF YOU - This has a great start, Beverly does a kind of squeal, which sounds better than that, but is the only way to describe it. Her voice carries on staying smooth. She sings effortlessly, it is amazing, she opens her mouth and the words seem to poor out. The lyrics in the song are good, they sound good together. The tempo of the song is nice, cool and not chilled, but steady and easy. The end has got to be the best part of this song, she sings it high pitched, but it sounds good. Overall the finish has to be the highlight of the song. 4/5
4. FALLEN SOLDIER – Not a great start, it is a bit boring, but she soon makes up for it. The start is very similar to the rest, a bit of moaning to start and then she starts singing. It doesn’t matter though because this song is completely different. On this song she sings and then there is a nice little follow up, the backing singers, kind of follows, but it sounds good. The chorus is great, very peaceful. It is a nice love song, packed with meaning. 5/5
5. BEAUTIFUL CONTRADICTION (Duet with MUSIQ SOULCHILD) – The song starts very similar to all the rest. This is getting a bit annoying; she is spoiling the songs by doing this stupid moaning thing. I don’t like this song; it isn’t up to Beverly Knight’s standard. The Duet singer is awful as well. He is so flat. This song has a really bad backing sound, the selection of instruments are awful. Overall = terrible. 0/5
6. HURRICANE JANE - This has a much better start, it starts with Beverly singing the chorus. It is sung high pitched, but a good high pitched. Then it breaks into the first verse and you hear the sweet, low tone of Beverly’s voice. Her voice seems to be able to change so well. The song is really good, with a light upbeat feel, smooth and chilled. Great for those hot summer days! 4/5
7. SAME (AS I EVER WAS) – A really good start! It has a brilliant guitar intro and then it breaks into the song, it sounds so good. It has a really ‘heavy’ upbeat feel, but not to heavy. The chorus must be the best part of this song – Beverly sings and then a second later the backing singers sing. This carries through the song on some of the versus and it sounds superb. Her voice shines through the backing singers and proves her power. Overall it is a great jumpy little song, just right before going out for the night! 5/5
8. WHATEVER’S CLEVER – Wow! This has got to be one of my favourites. It is quite similar to ‘Get Up!’ but it has a different spice to it. The beginning is the best; it has an incoming sound, like zooming in, that sounds very retro. Then she starts singing and WOW! Again! It sounds great; she does level singing (sing once and then start again and sing again). Overall the song has a great powerful feel to it. The song ends with the powerful singing and shouting/singing thing. The song just doesn’t want to give up! 5/5
9. AMBITION (IT COMES 2 U) – This song starts of like it is going to be a slow song, and it is. It is a nice change from all the upbeat, powerful songs. It has a nice steady – to fast pace. It has amazing lyrics and an amazing blend of her voice. The song is so cool and fresh. Near the end there is so nice long notes, one of the few times that she shows of the true power of her voice. Overall the song is so peaceful/fun it just ends up being great. 4/5
10. BESTSELLER MYSTERY – A great guitar sound on this song. Some strong lyrics, but she is going back to do her moaning at the start again. It doesn’t spoil it, but does annoy a bit. The singing is great, paced, (she sings, then pauses for the guitar, then sings etc). It has a really nice chorus, and a really great finish. Unlike a lot of most songs, it climaxes at the end and so it isn’t spoilt. A really upbeat, with strong vibes song, great for anytime. 5/5
11. GOLD – Oh no! Last song, why? Why now, I want more!! It is a great end to the album, a slow love song. The piano is great on this song. It adds that love feeling to it. Her voice makes it so special. It is perfect for a candle light dinner. The chorus is perfect for dancing to, smooth. There isn’t a big upbeat feel at all; she has made this song perfect. It is a really good song I love to listen to. 5/5
ENHANCED SECTION
A great little section added on, it has two videos, wallpaper, links to her website and a biography. It is really good and worth checking out! 5/5
Overall this is a great album, great selection of tunes and a great voice. It is defiantly worth buying if you like strong voices. 10/10!!
