Mike Skinner comparison is a lazy untruth, with his bold debut Plan B (aka Ben Drew) leaves the former trailing in terms of raw impact. This white boy tale-spinner from East London does owe an awful lot to Eminem, from the quick-spat-take-that fury of his microphone style (quasi-American accent to boot), to the bounce of his backing tracks, to taking the role of participatory narrator, devils advocate and instigator. But every aspect thats been neutralised, parodied or packaged to turn Mathers into a one-man industry is exaggerated and left red-raw here, with an added vulgarity that must be sending Mary Whitehouses obscenity antennas cuckoo as we speak. "Tough Love" is one of the clearest reasons for the Eminem comparison, recalling in tragic detail one set of parents perverse sense of discipline and the ensuing death of their daughter. One thing that sets him apart though is avoiding the solely self-referential cataloguing of his own existence, instead seeing the wider world and all of its wounds from his perspective. Its no mistake that he sounds like hes stolen Zack de la Rochas tongue in "No More Eatin". But this is no international project in his own words, his style is "like Little Mo getting raped and keeping the baby instead of getting it aborted". The only thing that should stop this from going supanova is not having Dr Dre on speed-dial and Radio 1 not owning a durable enough bleep-machine. --James Berry

Plan B - Who Needs Action When You Got Words
Firstly this album is very very rude and the parental advisory sticker should be taken notice of. Some of the words, lines and innuendos in this album make the contents of many other 'explicit' albums seem fit for kids. However with that besides this album is very good and best of all its British. Plan B's lyrical ability, in my opinion, stand him out against not only other English rappers but also most of what comes over from the states. The music is also different and, again in my opinion, superior to what has been released recently. Much of the album's lyrics are from the point of view of inner city kids and the 'tough' lives that they live and sound like they are very heart felt, which shows with the emotion throughout. Also of note is the Plan B plays much of the music on his guitar, as depicted on the cd cover, which is why the album has a slightly different sound from more commercial rap music with huge beats and bass.
Kidz - good song, starts rude, talks about the 'mentality of kids today'. Simple beat. Gives the listener a good insight into the rhythm and sound of the rest of the album. If you detest this song dont bother listening anymore.
Sick to Death - One of the best songs on the album. Great lyrics throughout. With the best verse on the album and probably one of the best ever (although the idea is stolen) when in the last verse Plan B describes a man getting stabbed...in reverse, HAS to be heard.
No Good - A much more uplifting beat, though the lyrics are as hard hitting (I stab you in the eye yo, with a biro, the same biro you use to sign a giro [cheque])as ever, I love the guitar playing which is the focal point of the music.
Dead and Buried - One of my favourtie songs of the album. Chilled out beat.
Mama - A lively song, with a decent enough chorus but just doesnt do anything to make it stand out
Charmaine - One of the funniest endings to a song I've heard, I wont spoil it. Overall a good song nice beat, is it me or is there a kind of south american guitar twang in parts? Basically he meets a girl in a bar the story is what follows.
I Dont Hate You - A very heartfelt song. Music is in line with the rest of the album. Song really picks up for the chorus.
Everyday - Quite a downbeat beginning, though there is a rather annoying 'whirring' in the background. The whole song just seems like it needs to be pushed onto the next gear, it seems like your waiting for something that never comes.
Though Love - Probably the best song on the album, catchy beat, thoughtful, meaningful and topical lyrics. Is about a girl who gets murdered by her parents due to religious differences and such. Quite a slow beat but Plan B's rapping is fast and seems to heighten the feeling throughout.
Where Ya From - decent song
No More Eattin' - Takes an original point of view for rappers, B talks about how he got bullied and his bike got stolen, his step dad was mad about his lack of 'man hood', the song goes on to explain how from them on he became 'hard as nails'. He gives a sentence or two to say what he was doing at 16,17, 18 and 19 and ends with him being 'well hard'. The music reminds me of the music from 28 Days Later the film (anyone else think this), a good song even if Plan does end up screamin no more eating, which kind of makes you think what was the real catalyst to turn him into a man (perhaps sent to bed without dinner)
Missing Links - decent song
Couldn't Get Along - great guitar at the beginning, and with some deep bass added in B's rapping just flows over the top
Who Needs Action When You Got Words - lively song, again more guitar, B rapping has a different pace and is definitely a nod-your-head song
Over all its a very good album with a few standout song's though some songs you turn on and dont even realise your listening to it because there just isnt much to them. One of my favourite things about the album, not just that Plan B is English, but the use of the guitar throughout really adds a different side to rap songs, and works brilliantly.
I will also add that for those of you who do not want to hear someone swearing all the time this is not one for you unfortunatly. But if you can look past that then I would definitely reccomend this.

Plan B is an unusual and very talented artist. He has taken rap and mixed it with aucostic guitars. Taking it in another direction. His music is quite deep and might seem outwardly angry, easily misunderstood. Which is the case with alot of rap but even more so here. Songs like "kids" might make some think he is promoting or encouragaing violence amoungst the youth, but in truth he is trying to englighten the youth, showing them the stupidity of ... ...with all his songs. Generally, as with many rappers, he tells tales of the hard life lived by the poor, unforunates, growing up in underprivileged, deprived areas, but there is alot more too it. This album speaks volumes and tells a thousand tales. Everything from the voilent mentatily of "kids today" to the broken messy life of his mother, to a recounting of the loss of a good friend.
Its deep, dark and moving from beginning to end. A true classic.
