Jimmy who?

Advantages: Great introduction to a songwriting genius
Disadvantages: Will not be to everybody's taste

styles of music. This song was a massive hit in 1968 a couple of weeks prior to the release of Hey Jude. At the time Jimmy's song was unprecedentedly long. Hey Jude, when released, was one second longer. No coincidence according to Jimmy who had visited the Beatles at Abbey road around this time. It must be conceeded that Jimmy's music is not loved by all, it is very much a love or hate thing. A perfect demonstration of this is the fact that MacArthur Park occassionally turns up in the 'Worst Song Ever' polls that are sometimes conducted. Some people just don't get him, and that's fine, it's all down to personal taste. If you are a fan of Country & Western you'll also have a fair bit of room in your heart for Jimmy. He wrote most of Glen Campbell's biggest hits ('Wichita Lineman', 'By the time I het to Phoenix' & 'Galveston'), all ...

So - who was it then???

Advantages: lovely story and illustrations
Disadvantages: none

- 'Don't Touch it!' I'm sure that for anyone who has more than one child the above scenario is probably quite familiar especially when your younger child always seems to mess up the older one's things! That's definitely the case in our house and it's neither of their faults - it's just the stages they are at! This is what I like about all of the Charlie and Lola stories though - they are so real! You recognise so much of what happens in the stories! In this story there is a lot you can talk about with young children such as how they should try to respect one another's things and if they do damage something than the best policy is to own up straight away. They can see how Lola makes things much worse for herself by not admitting to what she has done straight away. I also really like the way all of these stories are written. Every book (and ...

Review of Whoops! But it wasn't me - Lauren Child

Look Who it is!

Advantages: Interesting story, easy to read
Disadvantages: None for me

It's been a relatively short space of time since Alan Carr first became prominent on our TV screens on Channel 4's The Friday Night Project, which he first hosted on the 6th January 2006 with co host Justin Lee Collins. The series itself had enjoyed an eight week run the previous year hosted by Jimmy Carr (no relation to Alan just a spooky coincidence) but for the second series Channel 4 wanted new presenters and amongst those chosen was Alan Carr. I suppose if you was Alan Carr then at this point you could quite smugly say "and the rest is history..." "Look Who it is!" published at the latter end of 2008, just in time for a Christmas stocking filler is Alan Carr's autobiography. I often scorn at all of these "new" celebrities rushing out their autobiographies, often barely before their pubescent acne has cleared up. Whilst on the other ...
