Not Really A 'Wild Wild West' Soundtrack?
I purchased this CD because I liked the movie 'Wild Wild West' which stars Will Smith, Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek. I was frustrated when I heard all the songs of the album. Most of the songs are not actually included in the movie.

disc wouldn't really fit in the movie. Of course,Wild Wild Westis also a Will Smith blockbuster, and this is where the album takes its lead, making this a slick and polished successor to the best-sellingMen in Blacksong album. Will Smith opens with the title tune, a catchy and highly commercial chart-storming rap featuring Dru Hill and Kool Mo Dee. The remaining 14 tracks are mainly light pop-rap, though "Bailamos" by Enrique Iglesias adds an attractive Latin flavour and Faith Evans' "Mailman" and "Hero" by Breeze are both smooth soul ballads. It's difficult to see how some of the tracks are really inspired by the film, while others skilfully stir western ingredients into the mix--"Bad Guys Always Die" by Dr. Dre&Eminem adding six-gun samples to an outlaw odyssey. This is state-of-the-art radio friendly US rap, but just make sure you get the album you really want, because the orchestral soundtrack album by Elmer Bernstein (who composed the western classicThe Magnificent Seven) has a virtually identical cover.--Gary S. About each track, my ratings and few lines
1. Wild Wild West (5/5)
"To any outlaw tryin' to draw, thinkin' you're bad any draw on West best with a pen and a pad. Don't even think about it, six gun, weighin' a ton" This is an excellent song. I love the collaboration of Will Smith, Drew Hill and Kool Mo Dee which results to a superb performance. They make a great trio though Will Smith sings most of the lines. It's good to hear a wonderful team-up of these three performers with totally different voices; one has big firm voice, one has throaty voice and the other has high-pitched awesome voice. 2. Bailamos (5/5)
"Tonight we dance, I leave my life in your hands We take the floor, nothing is forbidden anymore" This one is an awesomely sensuous song. The latin beat is very soft to my ears and Enrique Iglesias' sexy voice gives justice to this song. Bailamos means 'we dance' and this track simply captures my heart.
3. Confused (3/5)
"I wanna be all alone. I guess I gotta be alone. But why I gotta be alone? Yeah, I'm so confused" This song has a sexy slow beat and it has good lyrics as well. I don't really adore this song but I still listen to it. The instrumentation of this track blends well with the melody.4. Keep It Movin' (3/5)
"Trying to rock me 'round when they be knocking me downtown. Quick to bed, want to know what I said." It's good to hear MC Lyte sing again. She seems to be off-the-limelight for quite some time. With this track, she proves she still does it just the same. Payne does it good too though I don't like the music package much. This track has a somewhat latin offbeat sound.
5. Getting Closer (3/5)
"I love it when you're here with me. My days with you are so sweet. You clear up all the things that's on my mind." This track is on a dance vibe though it doesn't have the charm to persuade me to dance. Tatyana is a good singer and Kel Spencer's verses are quite good. Perhaps it just happens that this is not a great choice of song for any of them.6. Lucky Day (2/5)
"Oh you said it can't be thought in another lifetime. Oh how we could soothe if we, we could combine like the moons and stars." This song is not the kind that I would like to listen to. It seems to me that the melody and the beat just don't rhyme much.
7. Bad Guys Always Die (4/5)
"Got your shotgun by your side. Got your horse and you got your pride You ride 'till there ain't no place to hide. It's sad 'coz the bad guys always die." I like the lyrics of this song. This maybe is the nicest song I ever heard from Eminem so far. Teaming-up with Dr. Dre is I guess a good choice. I seem to like the lyrics of this song too.8. Mailman (3/5)
"Just coming home from work to a cold and empty house. Can't even eat, so hurt. Anticipating on this couch, waiting on the phone to ring." This one is a quite a good song by Faith Evans. I may not like this song much but I really don't mind listening to it once in a while.
9. I'm Wanted (1/5)
"Cover your chest I'll spray these through your thin vest. Feared like an outlaw from the East, getting stalked by Jim West." This track is fast rap. Well, Kel Spencers' verses are not clear for me anymore to hear. It seems that I can't understand what he's saying. Some people may go for this song but I just don't want to spend my time listening to this one.10. Hero (3/5)
"Come back to me so we can love just like we did before. We always knew that if we had to fight, we'd do it side by side." This song is not that good, but it's not that bad either. I don't skip the CD when I am unaware that this track is playing.
11. Chocolate Form (3/5)
"There was a man in the back, under a cowboy hat that had the eyes that pierced right through. I can see you and he's watching me. This one has a Latin beat that is sexy. Neutral does well in this song but it's not the one that will give her a phenomenal fame.12. I Sparkle (2/5)
"No question, I answered all gangsters and paralyzed moves like professional dancers and so go West. We, a family skunk of rap This one has a school-boy hip-hop rhyme. Slick Rick really does well in hip-hop rhyming. I don't hate this song much but I just won't give some time to listen to it again.
13. The Best (3/5)
"Cuz you can be the one who can get it and if I get money we can split it. If I gave you my life would you live it? Would you fit it?" This track is not that bad to listen to, and it's not that good either. The rap is quite clean with a good rhyme. I really don't mind listening to this one.14. 8 Minutes To Sunrise (4/5)
"Nickname was Smoke, don't know if that was cause of cigarettes (or what?) or guns he thought. He called shots on the deck so I wasn't tryin' to call his bluff, This track is worth listening to. Common shows good display of hip-hop-expertise in this track and Jill Scott is versatile too. Common and Jill's team-up in a song is surprisingly good.
15. Stick Up (2/5)
"How I give it to you in many different ways. Gotta get paid put it down for my age, now. Hey who keep the shorties reaching for me.' This song is frustrating for me. 'Lil Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri are good singers. However, I feel the duo just don't really make a good track out of this. The rhyme is not that good. I don't feel like listening to this song again.
The Album
This album is a promotional CD and inspired by the the motion picture Wild Wild West which stars Will Smith, Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek. It contains 15 tracks and was released on June 15, 1999. The tracks are mostly hip-hop and R&B which generally fit the free-spirited personality of Will Smith.
The Packaging
The cover of the soundtrack CD has good layout with Will Smith and Kevin Kline in the front cover. On the inside cover inlay, the picture if Will Smith, Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek's picture wearing old-style western-design suits is featured. It's the worst picture of gorgeous Salma Hayek that I have ever seen yet. On the face of the CD itself, a big letter W appears in black & white with a golden Wild Wild West print. The titles of the tracks are not listed on the face of the CD. So, if I am going to lose the cover, I won't exactly know which number of track to play. The way the CD is packed, anyone can easily mistaken it as a movie DVD without Salma Hayek in the front picture. It's good that the phrase 'music inspired by the motion picture' appears overhead to determine that it is really a soundtrack. Without it, the package would have been misleading. It seems not a 'Wild Wild West' soundtrack album for me
I bought this CD after I heard the exceptional performance of Will Smith, Dru Hill and Kool Mo Dee. It's just so frustrating that most of the tracks are not really included in the movie 'Wild Wild West'. A soundtrack package is supposed to contain songs that are actually played in the movie. Some are played at the end part of the movie though when names of 'whoever' appear on screen for credits.
The popularity of the movie "Wild Wild West' was being used to promote this CD which I think is odd considering most of the tracks are not really in the movie and it is indeed misleading. It seems to me that the song 'Wild West West ' which became #1 hit on U.S. pop charts and won Razzie Award, and the song 'Bailamos' are the only two great tracks included in this album which I love. The other tracks, I shall say, are a little bit 'wild'.

Album Notes
Wild Wild West was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Will Smith drops another hit in the title track from the soundtrack of the 1999 summer blockbuster WILD WILD WEST. The song finds Smith operating in an up-tempo dance floor style and features backing vocals from Dru Hill and Kool Moe Dee. Wild Wild West also cleverly utilizes a sample from Stevie Wonder. There is plenty of other action on WILD WILD WEST. Bailamos, from Enrique Iglesias; Getting Closer, from Tatyana Ali featuring Kel Spencer; and Confused, from Blackstreet are all winners. Also catch Bad Guys Always Die, from Dr. Dre and Eminem. WILD WILD WEST also features the return of Guy (The Best) and Slick Rick (I Sparkle). All in all, one of the better soundtracks to come along in a while.
