“In Your Wildest Dreams” takes the mood even deeper and oozes sexuality, from a slow throaty “oh baby” which echoes throughout the song the words on this track get you in the mood for love.
“The sun goes down
And the moon comes out
My heart is pumping for you
And a real thing starts.
Tina teases her way through the song, the music is slow and sensual and the voice of Antonio Banderas ... ...catches the theme in a song that sends shivers down your spine. Definitely one to get you in the mood for a passionate night.
“Goldeneye “is a theme tune for a James Bond film and Tina pulls out all the stops on this one, her voice on this track has a similar style to Shirley Bassey as her best. Starting low and pulsing with feeling to the dramatic high notes that she does so well, the orchestration just heightens the mood and never ... more
Love her or hate her, Tina Turner is an outstanding performer with forty years experience in the Music Industry. To list her achievements and awards would make for a review in itself. Born in Nashville Tennessee on 26th November 1939, she is still out there strutting her stuff with an energy that many a younger artiste would envy. There must be few people who do not know some of her amazing story, from rags to riches, Anna Mae Bullock had a hard life, exploited from the age of 16 by Ike, her manager and later husband, she finally broke away from an abusive marriage which lasted 18 years. Now over sixty and in “semi-retirement” she is still adored by her many fans and is trying to get into the movie industry. Known well for her sultry singing voice with an incredible range of pitch, at just 5 foot 4 inches and legs that are one of her best attributes she takes over the stage at all her many performances.
I have been a fan of hers for many years and own many of her CD’s so was delighted to have “Wildest Dreams” as a birthday present a few years ago. This recording was made in 1996 and features songs old and new. It is a departure from many of her previous recording; on many of the tracks there is a lot of orchestration that took some getting used to. I started off not sure whether I enjoyed it but it grew on me and now is one of my favourite CD’s, showing a maturity that makes this stand out from other cd’s.
“Do What you Do” starts off the album with typical Tina Turner style, a good dancing beat and a catchy chorus, but doesn’t quite pack the punch I’ve come to expect from her.
“Whatever you Want” is one of those songs that make you want to turn the volume up to full blast and captures her fantastic range of vocals. A slow start rises to a full crescendo that just aches to be danced to.
“Missing You” is one of her classics another slow start deep, sultry, almost spoken song that again rises to a hectic beat with a chorus that many will be familiar with. “I ain’t missing you at all, since you’ve been gone away, I ain’t missing you at all, no matter what my friends may say. “ This is an old favourite, given a lot more impact by the use of a full orchestra backing.
“On Silent Wings” is a gem of a song and a personal favourite of mine. A haunting love song about breaking up, a guest performance by Sting initially in the background leads to an amazing duet at the end. The chorus is another one that gets you singing along, “You can’t hide what you feel inside, On silent wings, on silent wings, And the fire inside has left your eyes, On silent wings.
“You never see it coming, you just go your separate ways, On silent wings, on silent wings, I know I’ll never be the same again On silent wings. “
The earthy notes of the saxophone are constant throughout the song and blends the two voices together.
“Thief of Heats” starts with Tina’s breathy voice at low pitch and continues throughout the song when the beat gets stronger. This is song about a woman who a lot of us women would love to be, vampish, sexy, the "love them and leave them " type of person.
“I’m a thief of hearts, A burglar in the night Before they know what hit them I was out of sight.”
Keyboard, electronic effects and a brief sax solo keep the mood hot.
“In Your Wildest Dreams” takes the mood even deeper and oozes sexuality, from a slow throaty “oh baby” which echoes throughout the song the words on this track get you in the mood for love.
“The sun goes down And the moon comes out My heart is pumping for you And a real thing starts.
Tina teases her way through the song, the music is slow and sensual and the voice of Antonio Banderas singing in Spanish makes this a pure delight. The tempo catches the theme in a song that sends shivers down your spine. Definitely one to get you in the mood for a passionate night.
“Goldeneye “is a theme tune for a James Bond film and Tina pulls out all the stops on this one, her voice on this track has a similar style to Shirley Bassey as her best. Starting low and pulsing with feeling to the dramatic high notes that she does so well, the orchestration just heightens the mood and never drowns her vocals out.
“Confidential” at first seemed a weak link, a slow song with a theme of a mistress, the words are repetitive and only the saxophone really lifts this from an average track.
“Something Beautiful Remains” is a story of lost love and memories, a rare love song that works well with the backing vocals keeping Tina’s vocals to a range that best suits this type of music. Another catchy chorus that the backing group makes the most of:
“Tears will leave no stains, Time will ease the pain, For every life that fades, Something beautiful remains”
“All kinds of people”, a weak track that somehow doesn’t live up to some good lyrics despite a good beat and a good arrangement of electronics. It’s a song about mankind and a hope for the future.
“Some will die for you, Some will lie to you There’s all kinds of people in the world.
Turn the world around Tear the borders down, There’s all types of people in the world.
“Unfinished Sympathy” A song I was expecting to be from the theme of “Ghost”, (my eyes need testing). This is mainly orchestral with just a few lyrics by Tina that doesn’t seem to belong in this album. Good classical music but it just doesn’t do a lot for me.
“Dancing in my Dreams”
A fast upbeat number that has a bit of everything in it. The lyrics aren’t that special, but this has a haunting melodic tune that combines the best of the orchestral arrangement with the Durham Choir. It is almost Celtic in some parts with the use of pipes, guitars and violins changing the tempo from slow to fast and ending with almost a single note like a sigh on the wind. A very unusual recording for Tina but it works well and rounds off a good album.
Summary.
Despite the few weak links this is still an excellent CD and gets four stars from me. I’m more used to her “pop” music, which normally is the type of music to get me up dancing or using a pretend “microphone” to sing along. This seems to be a special arrangement of old and new songs designed with the album in mind. Tina Turner puts her heart and soul into her music and this is no exception, the guest performances make for a few superb tracks that work so well I would love to hear more. I admit to a love of saxophones and this made some of the tracks ones I can listen to again and again. As this was a present I don’t know the original price, but E-Bay have a few from around £3. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but for any fan this deserves a place in your collection.

Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (11/14/96, p.116) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Turner's raspy, robust alto and her ability to carry herself with both dignity and chutzpah are as formidable as they were when she recorded the incendiary 'River Deep, Mountain High' three decades ago..." Vibe (10/96, p.150) - "...Not only does this rambunctious, wiggly 57-year-old woman still immolate a mike, she can open a show just by asking, 'So...do you want some action'..."

On her first studio album in seven years, Tina Turner flashes the same indomitable spirit, moxie and raw sexuality that have carried her through nearly four decades in the music business, which is to say, she sounds as young as ever. Turner has a penchant for taking good songs and transforming them into her own; here she tackles John Waite ("Missing You"), Massive Attack ("Unfinished Sympathy"), Sheryl Crow ("All Kinds Of People," a song from Crow's abandoned 1992 album) and the Pet Shop Boys ("Confidential"). Trevor Horn gives her a sweeping, modern production, surrounding the Acid Queen with atmospheric beats, subtle electro-funk and cascading orchestration. She emotes all over it. Throw in a duet with Barry White that sounds as if it was recorded between the sheets ("In Your Wildest Dreams"), and WILDEST DREAMS shows a frisky knack for musical risk-taking that remains intact.
