If you are feeling very energetic you can climb the steps up the Tower and get a great view above the city,which was once the capital of Wessex and of England. The Deanery,the official residence of the Dean of Winchester is highly attractive and the Close is a beautiful and very tranquil area; particularly noteworthy are the 14 th century Pilgrim's Hall and the picturesque Cheyney Court.
The Visitor Centre,which was opened in 1993,houses the Cathedral Shop and the Cathedral Refectory; in the former visitors can buy a wide range of gift items and mementoes. There is some really great shopping as well in Winchester. There is three big chain supermarkets: a smallish Sainsbury's opposite the Brook Center (the big shopping complex), smallish Somerfield (next door to Sainsburies), and a big tesco's just on the outskirts of Winchester (walk down to the King Alfred statue, go left and follow that road for five minutes). In the Brook Center, there is an Argos, MVC, BHS, Beales, Stationary Box, Travel Agent, Toy Shop, Costa Coffee and Clinton's Cards (there is another one on the high street). There is very good parking underneath the center, as well as a Roman Museum (which has over run into WH Smiths) and Winchester's radio station Win FM. Okay - so the title is a little lame. But heck, I'm only the second person to write about 'Your New Favourite Band' and the title just seemed apt. I've bought several cd's of late, some old, some new, and of all of the cd's I have purchased, I find it is The Hives who are back in my cd player again and again.
When I first played the cd, my sister (she of no discernible musical taste) asked what that 'noise' was. When I responded, and quite enthusiastically I might add, that that 'noise' was my new favourite band, she simply gave me a withering look and asked if I could kindly keep it down, if not actually change the cd.
