From the outside the cathedral is quite breathtaking, in particular the West Front. It is possible to drive right past it on the road outside, but standing across the road on the tree-lined pathway leading to the cathedral entrance, it appears very quiet, standing majestically over Ripon centre.

Winchester is anyway.
There is some really great shopping as well in Winchester. There is three big chain supermarkets: a smallish Sainsbury's opposite the Brook Center (the big shopping complex), smallish Somerfield (next door to Sainsburies), and a big tesco's just on the outskirts of Winchester (walk down to the King Alfred statue, go left and follow that road for five minutes). In the Brook Center, there is an Argos, MVC, BHS, Beales, Stationary Box, Travel Agent, Toy Shop, Costa Coffee and Clinton's Cards (there is another one on the high street). There is very good parking underneath the center, as well as a Roman Museum (which has over run into WH Smiths) and Winchester's radio station Win FM.
