The end of the long and winding road
Review of Beatles Anthology Vol.3, The - Beatles (The) by JOHNV

Advantages: New facets of rock's greatest
Disadvantages: Not for the casual fan

...Anthology 3 documents the fractious Beatles years from 1968 to the end. Apple Records was launched ironically as the quartet were splintering into different units; to put it one way, they were increasingly solo artists appearing as session musicians on each others songs, or to look at it another way, they were already peering over the horizon at the post-Beatle world. There were no reconstructed and heavily overdubbed demos from which to create 'new' singles, but plenty of alternate takes from the white album, "Abbey Road", and "Let It Be" (with John spoiling the seriousness of a run-through of the title track by cheerfully calling Paul a bounder and a cheat!) as well as early versions of "All Things Must Pass" and "Not Guilty", which George wrote and later recorded properly on two of his solo albums in the 70s; and Paul's versions... Where the long and winding road began
Review of Beatles Anthology Vol.1, The - Beatles (The) by JOHNV

Advantages: A new facet of rock's greatest
Disadvantages: Not for the casual fan

...For years it had been an open secret that there were several unissued Beatles tracks in the vaults. Nobody expected any bona fide classics, but even substandard Beatles material still put much of the rival product to shame. When Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and George Martin met to oversee the three anthology collections and associated video/TV footage in 1994, this was Part 1 of the results - a fascinating package of odds and ends, previously unreleased songs, and outtakes shedding new light on the creative process recorded up to late 1964. The earliest was their one and only 78 rpm disc, recorded in a Liverpool electrical shop studio in 1958, a crackly run-through of "That'll Be The Day" and a song written by Paul and George with John singing lead, "In Spite Of All The danger". Also included are five songs from... Read review

"Get back to where you once belonged"
Review of Let It Be - Beatles (The) by Dizzy_Lizzy

Advantages: Some songs are still great despite Spector's meddling
Disadvantages: Spector's production, "Dig It," "Maggie Mae"

...it during their rooftop concert. The song is just good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, and it is one of the more fun-sounding songs. I actually prefer the 1963 version of this song, which can be found on Anthology 1. Another McCartney ballad, The Long And Winding Road, was the song most affected by Spector and his orchestra. I never liked this song, but when I heard the Naked version I enjoyed it and wondered why I had once hated the song so much. Then I listened to this version again. Good ol' Phil added a choir and orchestra, which give the song an overly schmaltzy feel and threaten to drown Paul's singing out. Skip this "clothed" version and listen to the Naked one instead. For You Blue is a lesser-known Harrison composition. George's acoustic guitar and John's slide guitar sound excellent, but George's vocals aren't as clear... Read review
