Advantages: A great jazz trumpeter - one of my favourites Disadvantages: Often not listened to as much as he should be because of the fame of Miles Davis
DizzyGillespie (full name John "Dizzy" Gillespie) was a great jazz trumpeter, having worked with many great jazz musicians, notably with Charlie Parker, and he even once played piano on some Charlie Parker recordings when Miles Davis was playing trumpet.
Watching DizzyGillespie play is fantastic, if also a little amusing. He has a speicially made trumpet, with the bell sticking up in the air to give him greater projection. Also, when he plays, he puffs his cheeks out a lot (as all trumpeters these days are told not to!), to allow him to do circular breathing, and it has the effect of pushing his glasses up when his cheeks puff out!
While DizzyGillespie showed his true skill and ability to play fast, frenetic phrases in his recordings with Charlie Parker, he also recorded with the likes of Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt and Stan ...
Advantages: Reasonably priced, lots to do, good food, great architecture Disadvantages: Not really any
We visited Lisbon this September having decided to go there instead of Rome. It has to be said that we were initially motivated by the fact that an equivalent holiday- same number of days, same rating of accommodation- was about HALF the price of Rome.
Lisbon is a fascinating place, the overall impression being of a city of great style and architecture, the ancient (colossal old buildings, grubby but striking statues and monuments) rubbing shoulders with the modern (great trains and tube, some flashy restaurants). It may be because of this that it took a little getting used to.
We arrived on the Saturday evening- admittedly a little late following various delays with the flight and then the bus, which became stuck in rush hour traffic- at our hotel, the Travel Pak in the Anjos area of the city. We ventured out to see if we could ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Lisbon (Portugal)
Advantages: A Vibrant City with a Cosmopolitan Atmosphere Disadvantages: A bit hilly for some
Lisbon or Lisboa is the capital of Portugal and enjoys a marvellous position. To the northeast of the city the River Tagus opens out to form the shining Mar de Palha (sea of straw). The city stands on the northwest bank of this lake just before it narrows and flows out into the Atlantic Ocean. For miles and miles, homes, factories, warehouses and port installations carpet the steep hills and valleys along the estuary. Lisbon is sometimes called the Cidade Branca, the White City but actually its colour is really a matt pastel shade. The best view of the city can be enjoyed from one of the many excellent fish restaurants in Cacilhas on the south bank of the river. Between Alfama (see my review), the labyrinth of narrow alleys on the citadel hill, and the elevated Bairro Alto, lies the flat plain of the city centre, the Cidade Baixa ...

Album Notes
Personnel include: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Leola Jiles (vocals); Mario Rivera (flute, soprano saxophone); Tony Kadleck (trumpet); Danilo Perez (piano); George Mraz (double bass); Grady Tate (drums). Recording information: The Power Station, New York, New York (08/1990). In 1990 Dizzy Gillespie recorded the soundtrack for and starred in a film called THE WINTER IN LISBON. Though the film was never distributed, the soundtrack remains, and was issued on CD in 2004. Featuring a 13-piece orchestra including pianist Danielo Perez, drummer Grady Tate, and saxophonist Mario Rivera, THE WINTER IN LISBON features all Gillespie originals arranged and conducted by the great Slide Hampton. Though there is a fair bit of swinging, bop-inflected jazz, some of the music is quite cinematic, especially the lovely "Lucretia's Theme," a solo piano spot for Perez, and the languorous "Magic Summer" with its vocal by Leola Jiles. Gillespie plays lead throughout, and while his chops naturally can't compare with his work from the '40s and '50s, it is still a pleasure to hear him. THE WINTER IN LISBON will be of particular interest to collectors and to those interested in seeing what Gillespie was up to in the latter stages of his career.
