Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The real star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and pretty great sober too, with David Gilmour getting lots of space for his most lyrical guitar playing ever. And, though the album is big and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery. --Douglas Wolk
Album Notes: Personnel: Mark Wills (vocals); John D. Willis (acoustic & gut string guitars); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Dan Dugmore (lap steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie (fiddle); Gary Prim (keyboards); Glenn Worf (bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). Recorded at Sound Emporium and Sound Stage Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; The Castle, Franklin, Tennessee. This Georgia country boy's energetic debut made a mark on the Country music scene, establishing Wills as an up-and-comer with enthusiasm to spare. The follow up WISH YOU WERE HERE is just as full of fire as its predecessor, but there's a difference. Wills has done some growing since his first album, and it's reflected in the songs here. Though there's not a lax moment, there's a good deal of introspection and thoughtful examination of the world in these tunes. In short, Wills gives New Country fans a chance to think while they two-step.
Advantages: Genre-busting songs throughout, deceptive arrangements Disadvantages: Another artist that's slipped through the cracks
...CD Review: Sarah Harmer - "YouWereHere" (2000)
(Someone else wrote a Quick Review of this album with a simple request - he wished someone would write a proper review.... so here goes!)
Okay, another artist that no-one's ever heard of! Don't tell me, she's Canadian?
My cousin who lives in Winnipeg would be proud of me, promoting singer-songwriters who come from his adopted country. Yes, Sarah Harmer is indeed of the Canuckistan persuasion. Now that doesn't mean I'm instantly going to like what she sings, nor am I likely to sing her praises from the rooftops - but even after the first listen to her 2000 album "YouWereHere", I discovered I'd a smile on my face, put there by some low-key but really enjoyable tracks that seem to have been forgotten by the music-loving public. Those of you who have read some of my other CD reviews...

...Ever since I read ?His ?n? Hers? I have been a big fan of the writer Mike Gayle. The books he writes are what I think is called ?lad lit? which is just like chick lit really except that it is written by a bloke about blokes doing ?blokey? things! All of Mike Gayle?s books are written in this way, including the latest one I have read ? WishYouWereHere.
The story is told by Charlie who is thirty five and single having recently separated from his long term girlfriend. His mate Andy has the idea that a holiday is just what Charlie needs to cheer him up. However, unbeknownst to Charlie he books an 18- 30 holiday in the Crete resort of Malia. Now both Charlie and Andy along with their other friend Tom (who has worries of his own) are way over the upper age limit and do tend to stick out like sore thumbs! Andy is determined that they will...

Advantages: Beutiful pure love, heart and soul was put into this album, hope you like it Syd! Disadvantages: the odd ear aching Gilmour guitar solo in inapropriate places ,otherwise flawless
...strumming which split into magical melody's as if a river was forking out into a delta as it reaches the sea, unleashing huge wads of magical energy.
Have a cigar is a comical response by Waters to the modern corrupt world some of us see ,the distant echoes of drumming and psychadelic space rock sympthonies blend together a roller coaster for the lyrics to ride which reach stunning ups and plunging downs, the tempo is so smoothly inconsistent it feels as if you are doing just that.'oh by the way ,which ones pink?' a comical example of the lyrics which are sung to painful intensity, the guitar solo is stunning acting as a huge push to speed this roller coaster down the tracks of musical magic, this song is carried on magic to another world, free your mind!
Wishyouwerehere is the guitar melody youwill love to hate,it feels like an acoustic...
