'Wish You Were Here' was their second number one album. Released in September 1975, an album indirectly dedicated to Syd Barrett who strangely turned up one-day whilst the band were recording the six-month album. His presence certainly their in the control room and yet also on the album. ... Read review

syntheszier); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums).Additional personnel: Roy Harper (vocals); Dick Parry (saxophone); Venetta Fields, Carlena Williams (background vocals). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England from January-July 1975.Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities. The mechanized throb of a VCS3 synthesizer, fed through a repeat-echo unit, signals the opening bars of Welcome To The Machine, a diatribe against an industry more concerned with money than creative music-making. Have A Cigar further establishes Waters' contempt by bringing in singer Roy Harper to play the role of a faceless suit, who none-too-innocently asks, Which one's Pink? The remaining songs indirectly look back to the first casualty of Pink Floyd's growing fame, the group's founder, Syd Barrett. The 20-minute-plus Shine On You Crazy Diamond has its roots in earlier pieces like Atom Heart Mother Suite and Echoes. But rather than just another Floydian soundscape, its lyrics make it a paean to Barrett's genius and a requiem for his subsequent breakdown. The first five of the song's nine movements open the album with sax player Dick Parry wailing as effectively as he did on DARK SIDE. The final four sections, which close the album, form a reprise that starts with the sound of wind and David Gilmour's guitar screaming and crying. The band then settles into a laid-back jam that ends with Richard Wright's billowing synth delicately fading out.The title track deals also with Barrett, as well as the tension the idealist Waters was feeling in battling the greed that surrounded the band's success. The themes of disillusionment planted throughout WISH YOU WERE HERE would eventually sprout full-blown on THE WALL.[Reviews]Q (6/00, p.72) - Ranked #43 in Q's 100 Greatest British Albums - Stuck with the impossible task of following DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, Pink Floyd did it with panache....'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' is the mellifluous rock-gospel opener, but there's weirder stuff here...n
Advantages: Five inspired pieces of creative studio work Disadvantages: Born out of a great loss of personal input from a departed leader
In the midst of the psychedelic sixties, a band emerged from the haze of the darkest London suburbs called The Abdabs. In 1965, three ordinary guys named Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright were the basis of this new band and it was only when they requested the poetic genius of Syd Barrett that they thought that the name Pink Floyd had more going for it. At least it meant some would take their music seriously…
It was Barrett who supplied ... ...for the bizarre, 'out of this world' lyrics. He became the leader, guiding his newfound flock into depths of creation and shrouded, unspoken imagination. Richard Wright graced our ears and took us to distant plains of the mind with his keyboards. Nick Mason was the man behind the beautifully timed drums and percussion and Roger Waters was responsible for bass, more percussion and vocals.
It wasn't long before they were a resident musical interlude ...

Advantages: Beutiful pure love, heart and soul was put into this album, hope you like it Syd! Disadvantages: the odd ear aching Gilmour guitar solo in inapropriate places ,otherwise flawless
...including animals and of course wish you were here which followed the success of DSOTM.Maybe after the huge success the band felt guilt and regret but when they decided to dedicate an album to the wonderful magical Syd Barrett this absolutely beutiful work of art was unexpected.Pure love, heart and soul was put into this album not the search for popularity and sales ,this is what makes this album so unique to the musical world nothing but love was ... ...wish you were here is a stunning work of art that belongs in a museum. The sound effects mixed with stunning bass melodies mixed with pouring guitar strums brings you up and up into heaven. The experimental voice of Waters ever so slightly higher yet soothingly deeper has such a divine feel it's simply psychadelic wizerdry.
The album contains a brilliantly stunning cover, sob just the cover alone makes you want to weep for Syd,the albums booklet contains ...

Advantages: Distinctive sound, incredible guitar/keyboard album. Disadvantages: A bit samey, and weak in the middle.
There's not a great deal I could say about Pink Floyd's 1975 album that hasn't already been said. But obviously, you know, I'll try and stuff. (This is why I normally write about bands like Subterranean Masquerade, whom you've never heard of).
The sequel to the phenomenally popular 'Dark Side of the Moon' was always going to be a huge seller based on legacy alone, which is a shame as this inevitably led to the band adopting a more radio-friendly ... ...musical (and, I suppose, substance) experimentation produced such inspired 20-minute classics as 'Echoes' and such ridiculous 20-minute embarrassments as 'Atom Heart Mother' in equal measure, were now making albums targeted at the mass international audience they had snared. The band's early discography is packed with incredible highs and lows, and though much of it is inherently rubbish, the audacity alone makes it enjoyable. Now a sensation thanks ...
