An entire session from November 1952, in which Lester Young (known as "Pres", short for ... more
"The President") joined the Oscar Peterson Quartet. It was plainly a happy and relaxed affair, as the incidental studio chatter and badinage reveals. Pres was notoriously sensitive to his surroundings and, particularly in later life, could only function properly in a friendly and supportive atmosphere like this. Not surprisingly, he plays exceedingly well here, his delicate tenor saxophone sound in full flower. At one point he bursts into song, with the current hit "It Takes Two To Tango", his only studio-recorded vocal. However, to prevent anyone being tempted to release it, he inserts some mild rudeness into the lyric (this was the early 50s, remember). At this stage in his life he was becoming more and more fond of slow ballads and there are several prime examples here, including touching versions of "These Foolish Things" and "I'm Confessin'" . Peterson and guitarist Herb Ellis seem inspired by the occasion and contribute superb solos. With Ray Brown and J.C. Heard completing the rhythm section, this CD contains some of the best of Lester Young's later work. --Dave Gelly

Advantages: Fantastic album, range of pieces Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit expensive for a 30 year old album
I only got into jazz very recently myself and I thought I'd use the platform of ciao to try and persuade others who may not have listened to it before to give it a go too. The CD I'm reviewing was chosen by me purely on the basis on the fact that I vaguely knew the name of the pianist from other jazz articles I'd read and the fact that I love jazz music where the piano is the main solo instrument.
The CD
OscarPeterson's 'Tracks' is not a new release. In fact it was originally released in 1971. The actual CD I'm reviewing has been digitally remastered and the tracks in no way sound dated; either in quality or in musical style. But this is something I will come on to in more detail later on in this review?
I have to say the cover to this CD seems uninspiring. Simply showing a side profile of a face (perhaps Peterson ...

Advantages: Full of fascinating information about Wilde's life and love of books Disadvantages: None really, except maybe best enjoyed by those with some prior knowledge of Wilde
The controversial Victorian playwright and poet Oscar Wilde, so the introduction to this book tells us, ?devoured and luxuriated in books?. He had a lifelong thirst for reading, so it?s not surprising to find that his house in Chelsea was packed with them. Not only was he an avid collector, but he was also an accomplished speed reader with a remarkable ? and to some extent photographic ? memory which helped him to absorb and recall instantly vast amounts of prose and verse. As a reviewer for the Pall Mall Gazette, he could master a book's content, plot or argument in minutes. (If only ciao had been around in those days as well).
Maybe it is only fair to get the one major chink in his armour out of the way quickly. Once, when he was preparing a lecture on the poet Chatterton, most of his notes were made up of entire pages and paragraphs ...
