Next, the title track. Why, oh why, does Brian tune his guitar like that?!? The chords in this song are SOOOO weird. But after a few listens, this song does start to get to you. This is the follow-up to Placebo's eponymous debut. It was released just after the first single, and opening track, "Pure Morning", and established fans had high hopes. Reviews out at the time said that they had matured, and this was an 'intelligent' album. Perhaps I'm just not 'intelligent' enough. This album isn't as good as their first. The first three tracks are pretty much standard Placebo. "Brick Shithouse " is scarily heavy, with distorted vocals. "You Don't Care About Us" is an obvious single, although still not as catchy as some of the tracks on "Placebo". "Ask For Answers" is very good. A quiet and emotional song, delving deeper into the side of Molko that was only glimsped at on the first record - although it could have done without the extra outro part. Next, the title track. Why, oh why, does Brian tune his guitar like that?!? The chords in this song are SOOOO weird. But after a few listens, this song does start to get to you. The lyrics are, again, typical Placebo. You could probably find just about any meaning in them, so they sort of become meaningless after a while. This is a great song, though - if not slightly depressing. The chorus is particularly collossal. "Allergic (To Thoughts Of Mother Earth)" is the first of the fillers. It's okay, but it gives me the impression that they wrote a song just to fit in as many lyrics as possible, but then didn't say much in it. "The Crawl" is depressing. Enough said. Then "Every You Every Me"! This is a great song. The guitar riff is really cool, the lyrics and phrasing are interesting. This is more like it - another single. "My Sweet Prince" is another boring quiet one - okay if you like that sort of thing, but it's not what I expect from Placebo. "Summer's Gone" carries on in a similar vein, and "Scared Of Girls" is a sort of emotionless rock song. The lyrics are a bit too meaningless, but there are some great guitar riffs in this song. Finally, "Burger Queen". I first heard this song when they did it acoustically on the radio, and it sounded much better then. The lyrics are a bit odd, but a cool song nonetheless. Oh, by the way, the inlay card has selected lyrics for each song. This is kinda annoying, but not a major gripe. Once again, there's a 'hidden' track on this album - a cool instrumental. Overall, I'm not sure whether to recommend this or not. There are some great songs on this record, but there are too many fillers on it for my liking. If I'd known what it was like before I bought it, I'd probably have not bothered, and just bought the singles instead.
Advantages: Moody and dark, a weird mix of song types! Disadvantages: None (i say that to a lot of albums, but seriously, NONE)
...to alot of critical acclaim. Without You I'm Nothing is the bands second album and many regard it as their best. It's an album of dark moody and emotional rock. Pure Morning - Probably the most popular Placebo song. This song was the first single off WYIN and a big hit. This song is great and the lyrics here are fantastic and will stay in your head. 'A friend in need is a friend in deed, a friend with weed is better. A friend with breasts and all ... ...the song it is.
Without You I'm Nothing - Every band has their best song. It comes eventually and the title song of this album just happens to be Placebo. This has to be one of the best songs ever. It's a sad depressing song but so beautiful. Brains voice is incredible and he shows off some of his guitar skill here. This song is practicly perfect. The right length, a beautiful melody, perfect chorus it's the highlight of the album.

Advantages: Good Songs are excellent Disadvantages: Bad songs are dire
...seriously limited commercial success. 1998's Without You I'm Nothing is probably their most commercially successful album, with well known songs like Every You Every Me and Pure Morning. But, is it good?
I know when I review albums I generally go through them song by song, but after my rift with grannycroft over this subject, I'm not going to do that. Basically, I'm just going to write about it and see how it is rated.
This is a bit of a mixed ... ...like Without You I'm Nothing (which is a class song), The Crawl and Burger Queen. There's faster, punky songs like Brick Sh*thouse, Every You Every Me and Scared Of Girls. There's dead slow songs like My Sweet Prince. Then theres the other songs. Its all a bit of a mixed bag. usually on these kind of albums though, when you listen to the whole album they seem to fit together. On WYIN, they don't. On The Colour And The Shape, Doll and Monkey Wrench ...

Advantages: Good songwriting,Great Songs, Fabulous Band Disadvantages:
I bought this album on the strengh of the last one, and found it to be much better. It's more subtle, and not as instant as 'Placebo', but the songs have a beauty of their own.
The best songs on the album are the less 'rock' ones, in particular 'Ask For Answers' and 'My Sweet Prince'.However, the opening 'Pure Morning' is brilliant, providing a fantastic, recognisable song and setting the standard for the rest of the album.
The artwork of the cd ...

Advantages: Dark,Poppy,Sexy,Unique Disadvantages: Cpl of fillers
...Placebo album in my opinion without these the album wouldnt stand up.
Track five is the title track "Without you i'm Nothing" which David Bowie a year later joined to sing with Brian on the single release. Its a midtempo song that really gets going late in the song.
"Every You and Every Me" the eight song on this album is perhaps the catchiest of the lot featured heavily on the Cruel Intentions movie. "Caaause theres nothing else to do, every me ... ...been this much at stake!"
"Scared of Girls" a heavier song one of the weaker perhaps filler tunes "Her younger sister had a blister where i kissed her" - perhaps not the shakespeare of this generation, on this track at least. Moving on.
Final Track:Burger Queen : I remember this song as being my favourite off the album back then i think it still has that appeal now. Very slow "Came to this world by caeserian section, takes him all day to get an ...

Advantages: it's an amazing album Disadvantages: none
With out you I’m nothing is a deeply moving and thought provoking album. Pure Morning is the song that every one know …a friend with weed… and all that. Brick shit house, well my mates little bro is obsessed with that song, he thinks it is absolutely amazing and I can’t argue with that. Every me Ever you is definitely the sing along track. Scared of girls is just sublime in my humble opinion, Burger Queen is the most moving track on the album and ... ...just me. The hidden track (evil dildo) is very odd but also very cool. Admittedly I may be a bit bias but for me there is nothing that Brain Molko can do wrong. His voice and clothes may not be to every ones taste (“a cock in a frock etc”) but I think he is wonderful and that every one should worship him for the genius that he is. ...

Advantages: Placebo's 3rd offering... darker, more chilling Disadvantages: some weaker tracks, although the dancey ones r growing on me.....
I own "Placebo" and "Without YouI'mNothing"
Placebo, Muse and Radiohead are my favourite groups.
I work in a music shop and had long awaited Placebo's 3rd offering... Black Market Music.
Now, contrary to what others have said, i found that the album did not provide me with instant gratification. Having said that, it did enough for me to keep its place in my cd player. It seemed to me that Brian Molko's like for reflective tracks had turned to one for dark, reflective tracks, the album is brooding and it refuses to be rushed. Brian Molko won't care if anyone likes his new child, its his masterpiece, an extension of himself and its grown on me huge amounts. I can't put my finger on it but the darkness and unpretentiousness of the album is very attractive, it sucks you in, controls u for an our and then begs to be played again ...
Advantages: I will always love Brian's voice Disadvantages: Everything else was largely disappointing
I clicked on this 'monday' competition thing, and when I saw it was a Placebo album my first thought was.... really?? My boyfriend saw our Brian in Stockholm airport, and we both just assumed they were only big over there now...
Early Years
I absolutely loved them 10 years ago, and even then I felt I was a bit 'late' getting into them. They'd already released two big-selling albums - Placebo and Without YouI'mNothing. In 1999 they played live with David Bowie at the Brit Awards (their cover of 20th Century Boy), and I think that's when I heard of them. After all, I was 11 at the time, my music taste consisted of what my friends liked, what my brother liked, and anything my dad didn't like.... which was Steps, The Offspring, and Smashmouth, respectively. (My dad particularly didn't like their B-Side 'Sorry About Your Penis ...
'Black Market Music' is the third album from the unique trio and is by no means a step down from the other two. It is a mixture of the power of power of 'Placebo' with the sensitivity of 'Without YouI'mNothing'. The bass is a big as ever, with Brian's lyrics and voice softening the heaviest of songs, and not to mention the inevitable presence of acoustic guitar in and amongst to add that extra little something.
The album begins with the first single taken from the album, 'Taste in Men', a song filled with power and a memorable refrain making it the ideal starting song. 'Spite and Malice' provides something different with guest vocals from Justin Warfield, who adds something of a Fred Durst on a happy day tone to the song. 'Slave to the Wage', the second single, provides the essential cheery Placebo song, such as 'Pure Morning ...

Album Notes
If you want an idea of where Britain's darlings Placebo are coming from, imagine Smashing Pumpkins taking on the poppier sections of the Spiritualized songbook. Even that doesn't quite capture the unique sound Placebo achieves on WITHOUT YOU I'M NOTHING, so here's another clue-the title is pretty self-explanatory. The character in these songs (for diplomacy's sake, we'll give Placebo the benefit of some creative distance) is pretty unimpressed with himself and his place in the world, and like Billy Corgan of the aforementioned Pumpkins, he isn't afraid to grouse about it in a high, keening tenor over aggressive guitar backing. Unlike the Pumpkins, Placebo are students of the art of pop songcraft, and many of the tunes here will stick with you even after just one listen.

Rolling Stone (2/4/99, p.61) - "Placebo are the latest--and toughest--in the recent line of English pretty-boy guitar-glam bands....In the great tradition of T. Rex..." Q (3/98, pp.110-111) - "...WITHOUT YOU I"M NOTHING is a generous and inclusive record....they've fashioned an album of such honesty and scope - proof that there is more to them than a set of passports, a racy reputation and a girl's haircut..."
