Brian Molko and Co's second album brought them great interest in the mainstream media. The 1998 album opened by the exquisite single "Pure Morning" which i will always remember for the excellent music video which featured Brian(with the obligatory black nail polish) walking vertically down a side of building with worried onlookers sensing a suicide but at the same time looking up in disbelief. "A friend in need is a friend indeed" brian sings out in this alternate pop rock masterpiece.
The second song on this album is the rather heavier sounding song appropiately named"Brick Shithouse" which reminds one more of their self titled 1996 album with a less pop feel. One of the weaker tracks on this album.
Next to come is the delightful "You dont care about us" a uptempo almost "pop ditty" for the alternative fans style song. Released as a single.
"Ask for answers" comes next which is a downtempo affair with brian "asking the sea for answers" there are four such "ballady" songs on this album "The Crawl,My Sweet Prince and Summers Gone" of the best quality of such songs on any Placebo album in my opinion without these the album wouldnt stand up.
Track five is the title track "Without you i'm Nothing" which David Bowie a year later joined to sing with Brian on the single release. Its a midtempo song that really gets going late in the song.
"Every You and Every Me" the eight song on this album is perhaps the catchiest of the lot featured heavily on the Cruel Intentions movie. "Caaause theres nothing else to do, every me and every yooou" Pucker up for heavens sake theres never been this much at stake!"
"Scared of Girls" a heavier song one of the weaker perhaps filler tunes "Her younger sister had a blister where i kissed her" - perhaps not the shakespeare of this generation, on this track at least.
Moving on.
Final Track:Burger Queen : I remember this song as being my favourite off the album back then i think it still has that appeal now. Very slow "Came to this world by caeserian section, takes him all day to get an erection" , "dreams of a place with better selection" ok very rhymy but needs to be listened to, perhaps not the most charming of lyrics but the song will just wrap you up and if you had a less than good time with girls growing up you will be able to relate to this. No guitars played in anger on this song!
Well thats it! Definently alternative rock but a lot poppier catchier than say someone like billy corgan.
If you want to try out Placebo i would go with this album first as its on the whole not the most difficult listen or in fact the singles collection of an overall view on their career so far and perhaps you will find yourself putting on eyeliner too!!

I love Placebo....went to see them a couple years ago at Wembley arena and for their encore they brought out Robert Smith from The Cure and duetted a couple of tracks - including Boys Don't Cry. Fecking awesome! Need a new copy of this album as I wore my (moody) copy out by overplaying it!! Cheers, DD
