Underground, Overground, Wombling Free

Advantages: Parents and grandparents can remember the first time around. Good clean show, helps kids use their imagination, helps give them the idea to Keep Britain Tidy.
Disadvantages: None. I'm a fan!

Underground, overground, wombling free - it's good to see Wombles are back on tv. A chance for another generation to get to know those furry little recyclers. Gosh, I had a Great Uncle Bulgaria way back then ... it'll seem odd to be getting them now for MY grandchildren. I'm glad that they've decided to bring back the old shows on our various tv stations, and this show in particular as it was always a "nice" show, extolling the virtues of these little creatures who took rubbish that people had discarded and made useful things from it. Were they the first recyclers? Or maybe, originally, the idea was to discourage childrne from becoming litter bugs? Who knows? All I know is that I spent ages watching the Wombles when I was little and loved them dearly, and now my grandchildren can do the same. Today's kids may be a lot more ...

Review of The Wombles

Remember you're a womble!

Advantages: brilliant for kids of all ages
Disadvantages: none

Underground overground wombling free the wombles of wimbledon common are we.... I bet you can remember the songs as well. As a child I really enjoyed this programme. It was on just long enough to withold a childs attention span and leaving you ready for the next broadcast. Okay you already know what they were about - they where a group of furry little creatures that lived on Wimbledon Common and spent their day cleaning up the rubbish that the untidy humans leave behind. Their humble home was brilliant, decorated with sweet wrappers and newspapers. My favourite character had to be Orinoco, he was the laziest womble. He would pick up a piece of litter and then settle down on a bench for 'forty winks', always to be woken up by some unearthly noise. I must admit thought that I have recently watched the new series and I don't know ...

Review of The Wombles

Wombling Free

Advantages: Some fantastic performances and a strong individual style
Disadvantages: It won't be everyone's cup of tea

Patrick "Kitten" Braden is abandoned on a church doorstep as a baby and brought up in a tiny Irish town. But he grows up to be a sharp-tongued transvestite who leaves his native Ireland for London in search of the mother he never knew. Along the way he meets glam-rockers, druid bikers, terrorists, a magician and a life-sized Womble. Writer-Director Neil Jordan is probably best known for "The Crying Game", though, despite the transvestism "Breakfast on Pluto" has more in common with his earlier production of "In the Company of Wolves". It has that sense of determined whimsy about it. You'll know form the moment you see two computer-generated robins having a subtitled conversation whether you're going to enjoy this film. I thought it a little odd, but I was willing to go with it and I'm glad I did. This turned out to be one of the most ...
