Advantages: Fantastic album Disadvantages: Need to brush up on your Spanish
It is an unfortunate fact of life for the many thousands of talented latin musicians that, if you want to make it on a worldwide scale, you have to learn to sing in English. This was powerfully illustrated in the late 1990s by Ricky Martin, and in 2001 when Shakira's third studio album - but only her first in the English language - expanded her appeal from the confines of the Spanish-speaking world and sent her global. Of course the fact that the ... ...coupled with the fact that Shakira herself is a multi-talented mega-babe, did her progression no harm at all. The album itself is an appealing mix of traditional latin beats, pop and ballads, with a number of tracks still sung in her native tongue - but not enough to make the album unlistenable to the monolingual masses (of which I am one). Voi-la Intruder is the 1st album by Gogol Bordello and was released in 1999 by Rubric Records when the band was relatively unknown. The album has a much more raw style than the later work which has a more polished finish, the album is split in to two parts Movement One (Songs of Immigration in Voi-La Minor) and Movement Two (Optzay Pertruder).
The album sounds exactly what it is a bunch of drunk Russians with a mad Russian Ukrainian Gypsy (Eugene ... ...Europe (Poland, Hungary, Austria, Italy) fleeing from the eruption of Chernobyl before moving to Vermont thanks to a resettlement program.
With Eugene, you get somewhere between Borat and Freddy Mercury and it's always fun. This album though is a little bit too raw and a lot of songs just sound rowdy with an accordian. There are enough hits though where Eugene sneaks in and out of Russian and English seemlessly and tells stories in a more than legendary ...
Advantages: Brilliant combination of tunes, from up-beat to ballads. Disadvantages: None at all.

2. Don't Turn Off The Lights
This is one of my favourite songs of the album. It's another up-tempo song , which begins slow but then a beat kicks in with a very catchy chorus. The electric guitar is used to full effects in this song, and includes Enrique singing Soprano-high vocals.
3. Love To See You ... ...the others. It's not quite as cruel as the title may seem. But suprisingly he "loves to see you cry" and he doesn't know why, but it "makes him feel alive". This was also released as a single and the video features Enrique wearing an unusual dressing gown/hoodie!

If you haven't heard this song, you must have been in mars for a few years. This was Enrique's biggest succes single, when it was released in 2001, in the UK, and is still a classic. ...
Advantages: Good little Ep Disadvantages: Well it's an EP, so only 6 tracks!
East Infection is a 6 track EP by Gogol Bordello that was released in January 2005, some 6 years after the band's first release. They obviously polished their sound during that time because there is a much more cleaner sound to this little EP.
This little EP is incredibly experimental though, the 1st track East Infection is chaotic, quick and catchy with short parts of what seem to be jazz guitar, Ave B. without doing anything particularly special ... ...not too heavy this one, Mala Vida is upbeat and sung in spanish, it has a very latin feel to it whilst Copycat is a weird track that uses reggae vocals on top of Chemical Brothers or Prodigy style electronica and features very humorous lyrics.
Strange Uncles from Abroad has a System of a Down feel to it but with some awesome strings, it's not my favourite song of the album though, that award would have to go to Mala Vida but the last track on the ...

...I own "Fado em mim, Fado Curvo, transparente & Conncerto em Lisboa" all four of them are amazing!!!! I also own the 2 DVD's- Concerto em Lisboa and live in London.
