Benalmadena the Costa del Sol

Advantages: Friendly town with lots to do, a lovely holiday.
Disadvantages: If you steer clear of the 'English Bars' there are none

COSTA DEL SOL Benalmadea Costa, I'm afraid I was always a bit of a 'travel snob' regarding the Costa del Sol. I envisaged the types of scene in TV's Benadorm, a type of Blackpool with sun. As members of a vacation club ( it was then Sunterra now Diamon Resorts) we had the opportunity for a weeks break for relatively few points at the Sahara Sunset in Benalmadea Costa, as we could get Easy Jet airfairs to Malaga for a very low price we decided to try it. We have been three times more since then - so needless to say I was not disappointed. Benalmadena is only 15 kilometers from Malaga Airport, car hire is easily obtainable but it is only 25 euros for a taxi from the airport and there are plenty of excursions and good public transport available in the resort. Tequila and table dancing in Tijuana, Mexico

Advantages: Good shopping, bars and clubs
Disadvantages: Can be sleazy

take passport and/or visa, and be prepared for questioning at the border control when re-entering the usa. The US authorities are understandably, very security conscious. The border at Tijuana is said to be the busiest in the world, and illegal immigration is a big problem so be prepared for a wait! My experiences at the border was that when entering Mexico there are no controls whatsoever. When leaving Mexico, on one visit, we waited for 2 hours before we went through. At other times, which were very early mornings, we near enough walked through. Immigration are likely to ask if you bought anything, may check your bags, and want to know your intentions in entering america. * tj- partying and shopping! * tijuana is often referred to as "t-j", maybe english speakers are too lazy to use the spanish pronunciation. Down Mexico Way

Advantages: Wonderful ancient ruins to explore
Disadvantages: food was often fairly poor

, for a wonderful view of this enormous old city, although rather regretting all of that tequila. Xochimilco We arranged a trip to Xochimilco the Venice of Mexico, 180 km of canals full of colourful boats, in a suburb of Mexico City. It was very busy because it was a Sunday, with traffic jam of gondolas, but great fun, colourful and a wonderful setting, with old ladies in small boats selling flowers and various people selling food etc. Merida We flew to Merida with Mexicana airline and checked into the Gran Hotel overlooking Parque Hidalgo just one block from Plaza Mayor, an excellent location and rooms with balconies and pleasant views, costing less than £50.
