Album Reviews: Kerrang (Magazine) (p.55) - "The Funeral Pyre have retained their malevolence and their capacity for creating ear-wrecking aural monstrosities without sacrificing their penchant for a killer melody."
Advantages: powerful tunes, easily remembered lyircs, good songs for sing in the car! Disadvantages: some songs can come across a bit depressing,
...like Haiti and In the Backseat, a bit whiney and skip through other songs on the album to listen to few on there that they did like.
Within the band there seems to be an eclectic mix of Instruments including some of the following: 12 string guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, synth, bass, drums, something called a rickenbacker, an accordion and a telecaster. All this means that the band is made up of eleven people, with four more added to play instruments on one song, Wake up. As you can imagine this gives the band a sound like no other.
The art work of the album is something like an eighteenth century engraving, and the album cover is like that of Damien Rice, being a simple hard paper outer shell, causing it be easily damaged and ripped. Or in the case of my Damien Rice, lost.
The albums name is 'Funeral', the band have obviously taken...

Advantages: Consistant quality in track list Disadvantages: Not Maintstream, yet..
...After just going to see Atreyu live at Manchester academy I was practically shell-shocked at how unique this band are, they successfully mix punk singing with heavy singing, also the choruses are catchy and merge the songs perfectly together.
Anyway...after seeing them live at Manchester I went and bought the album the next day and didn't see it leave my hi-fi for weeks on end, the track list is as follows:
1. Blood Children (An Introduction)
2. Bleeding Mascara
3. Right Side of the Bed
4. This Flesh a Tomb
5. You Eclipsed By Me
6. Crimson, The
7. Remembrance Ballad, The
8. Interlude, An
9. Corseting
10. Demonology & Heartache
11. My Sanity on the FuneralPyre
12. Nevada's Grace
13. Five Vicodin Chased With a Shot of Claret
what any frequent buyer of CD's would expect with a 13 song track list...

Advantages: Fine performances all round, especially Ludwig and Corelli Disadvantages: Callas not in best voice
...the funeralpyre.
This was Callas' great role and in some regards this recording captures her greatness but at other times it cannot match her earlier official recording from 1954. Callas is not in her best voice, her high notes wobbly and piercing compared to 1954. One has the feeling that a performance about '56-'57 would have been wonderful. She sings softly far more often in the 1954 set and she is very tender and delicate in those moments. She is at her best in the second half where her confrontation with Pollione is scorchingly intense and her "Oh Rimembranza"is beautifully phrased. There she is joined by Christa Ludwig's Adalgisa which is nicely phrased- Ludwig's voice in bel canto music is remarkable considering how different this is from her regular repertoire of say Wagner - she can match Callas beautifully in the duets...
