Let's face it, all of us have hummed along to a Destiny's Child song before now. They're so catchy and it's no wonder that they have done so well in recent years, regardless of their constantly changing numbers. The Writing's on the Wall is a brilliant r&b album, and it contains all of the recent hits that we've come to love and know, including the no.1 hit "Independent Women".
Destiny's Child came to the world with a message, and much of it is about how girls should treat their guys or how guys shouldn't treat their girls. Once you get through all of that, you're left with a pure r&b experience.
The album has recently become even more appealing, with the addition of a bonus CD with four extra tracks.
Intro ===== Hmm, what is going on here? It's one of those trendy introductions to the album with the girls trying to act out something from the Godfather. Grin and bear it!
So Good - 8/10 ======= One of their earlier hits, it's a lighthearted and catchy song directed at an ex-boyfriend. This stuck in my head for
a while after hearing it.
Bills, Bills, Bills - 8/10 =================== Apparently, now their boyfriends won't pay the bills! Interestingly, this was one of the reasons why they later did "Independent Women" - they didn't want to be seen as housewives. Still, a good song regardless.
Confessions - 7/10 =========== Featuring the collaboration queen that is Missy Elliot, this is a great song. Shame it was never released as a single.
Bug-a-Boo - 8/10 ========= Stupid title, yes, but a great song. Bug-a-boo is a term the girls thought of when writing this song as kids. Talented ladies.
Temptation - 7/10 ========== Slow, sultry, and sexy. This song is all about being tempted to be unfaithful. Cleverly written so that the chorus (all about immorality) is sung to the tune of a well-known nursery rhyme.
Now that she's gone - 7/10 =================== Pretty similar to the last track, but great in its own right. Definitely one to be played later at the party.
Where'd you go - 8/10 ============== Definitely one of my favourites on the album. Those careless girls have now lost their man. You'll be left singing "...oh baby, where'd you go..." for hours after.
Hey Ladies - 7/10 ========== Destiny's Child rally the female troops with this song about men cheating on them. Nice music, shame about the men-hating lyrics.
If you leave - 6/10 ============ Great song in its own right, but not up to the standard of the rest of the album. Features an artist called "Next" - and on that note...
Jumpin, Jumpin - 9/10 ============== Definitely one of my favourites. Guarranteed to get anyone up on the dancefloor. Turn the volume right up on this one!
Say my Name - 9/10 =========== One of their more recent hits. I love it, as it's just so r&b. Wonderful vocals too.
She can't love you - 7/10 ================== A mellow track with a great latino feel, courtesy of a Spanish guitar. Calm the stress of a tough day, sit back and enjoy this one.
Stay - 7/10 ===== Desting's Child were certainly going for a ballad when they did this one. Possible contender for a last-dance song. Nice, if you like that sort of thing.
Sweet Sixteen - 6/10 ============= Destiny's Child get on their moral high-horse with this one, all about a sixteen year old who living life too fast. I think it's more the kind of song that would appeal to the American youth than the British.
Amazing Grace - 10/10 ============== The girls show their Christian roots with this excellant a cappella rendition of Amazing Grace. The vocals here are tight and nothing short of brilliant. They also give this an original and up-to-date spin on an old favourite.
Get on the Bus - 7/10 ============== Not a bad funky r&b number. Pity it's repeating what the girls have been saying for the whole album - guys, get on the bus.
Bonus tracks
Independent Women - 9/10 ================= If anyone's been locked in a cupboard for the past couple of months, this is the accompaying song to the movie Charlie's Angels. It's a fantastic song that gets everyone singing along.
Independent Women Part Two - 4/10 ========================== What's this doing on the album? It's a poor alternate version of Indepedent Women. Got to keep away from this one.
Eight Days of Christmas - 7/10 ======================== It's a fun bonus track put on the CD just in time for Christmas. Can seem a bit perculiar if played in the middle of summer though.
No No No - 7/10 ======== Mixed by ex-Fugee Wyclef Jean, it's a great bonus track. Nothing too special though, and the title kind of gives away the whole point of the song.
Well, so that's it. My opinion of the Destiny's Child album. It's a great CD in its own right and contains all their recent hits. I would go as far to say that it's probably the best r&b album I own.
