Comparable to En Vogue, this band are one of the sweetest sounding 'R&B' acts around, but with their fame comes the strain. The never-ending change of line up means that the group continues to hang in the balance. 'The Writing’s On The Wall' is the second album from these splendid chic divas, and now it's gone multi-platinum, could it be the R&B album of the year?
Producers on the album include amongst others are Kevin 'She'kspere' Briggs(relatively unknown) and Missy Elliot who gives the band varied music to work their charm on. With clever hooks and drumbeats, and with each song very distinctive, Destiny's Child has a beautiful sound of their own, and I think they have revolutionised this type of music.
The title 'The Writing's On The Wall' is said by the girls to "spell out what happens in a relationship when a couple treat each other in a certain way". The concept of the different commandments spelt out before each song came from none other than Wyclef Jean.
The re-release of this album comes with a second CD containing remixes of the new single 'Independent Women' (from the 'Charlie's Angels' soundtrack). After all, the girls showed femininity, confidence and independence on their album, so who else could have sung the main tune to the movie?
They are an effervescent, hip-shaking, finger-wagging, 'you-go-girl' (don’t you just hate that americanism!) type of band. The oozing "Bug A Boo" is irresistible, as is the spirited "So Good". To their credit, the girls can slow the pace down, and on the soft "Temptation" they show it to great effect. There are some up beat numbers like "Jumpin Jumpin" and the the one that everybody knows "Independent Women". This album is a mix with something for everyone.
In the midst of today's boy band explosion, it's refreshing to know that there is another music option. Destiny's Child are the epitome of woman-cool, and they show the world that women are not what they used to be.
If you're into R&B, great rhythms, and fun lyrics, don't miss this.
