As a massive Coldplay fan, I've been looking forward to the release of their new album, X and Y, for months now. Based upon their past albums, Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head, which are in my opinion masterpieces, like most people I was again expecting a brilliant album.
And although I'm not disappointed, it's definitely different from the previous two albums. The signature piano melodies have become quieter, more subdued, and the guitars are more prominent creating a more polished, rocky sound. Similarities exist with Rem, U2 and even Willy Mason. Although the songs are still great, Coldplay now don't seem quite so different and orignal, just another worldwide famous rock group.Maybe thats because their style of music has been copied by a vast number of new indie bands recently.
The outstanding, haunting ballads that Coldplay are famous for are definitely still there though. Track 2, What If, is a haunting ballad that will get stuck in your head, as is the title track X and Y. Their first release, Speed of Sound is another soaring tune. In fact, each song is very good, but they don't stand out like tracks from the first two albums.
All in all, you should buy this album, as Coldplay are still a cut above the rest. Just be prepared not to read all the hype that this album is absolutely amazing;it is very good, as people expect from Coldplay, but perhaps not quite so brilliant as Parachutes or A Rush of Blood to the Head. Still, in my opinion, if you look at the album alone, without comparing to their previous works, it is still an essential buy.

Review of X And Y - Coldplay
Advantages: Accoustic harmonies and easy to listen to songs.Sincere and heartfelt lyrics. A really nice album. Disadvantages: I didnt like it as much as X&Y or A Sudden Rush of Blood to the Head.
