The Art of Conducting - maestro myth revealed?
Review of Art Of Conducting - Great Conductors Of The Past (DVD) by  Maestrolover

Advantages: Superb production, fascinating footage, great music
Disadvantages: None whatsoever apart from wanting more

...It surprises me a lot that no-one has written a review for this amazing DVD! I've had it for a few years now and it frequently comes off the shelf to be played as it always makes an inspiring impact on me in one way or other no matter how many time I have watched it. Anyone who has an interest in classical music and the big name conductors of the past will find this a fascinating document which will inevitably lead to further exploration of the recordings by these renowned names. Basically the DVD attempts to lift the lid on the mystique of the "maestro" - with rare and often previously unseen archive footage of a wide-ranging selection of the great conductors of the 20th century in performance and rehearsal, combined with insightful comments from famous colleagues such as Yehudi Menuhin, John Eliot Gardiner, Isaac Stern and many... Smiling music
Review of Mozart: Flute Concertos No 1 & 2; Flute & Harp Concerto by  Rogerbyname

Advantages: Cheap, easy to listen to
Disadvantages: Won't rock your world

...This is an elegantly packaged and well presented CD which pretty much does just what it says on the box. It is a re-release from EMI's excellent and superbly engineered back catalogue, well at this price what would you expect? The English Chamber Orchestra is ably marshalled by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, who for all his genius as a solo violinist, never really achieved top-flight status as a conductor. And alongside him the flute playing from Samuel Coles is bright and suitably mellifluous. These are pieces you will know, even if you didn't know that you knew them. Their vintage puts them at the back end of the time before period instrument performances began to dominate the market in classical music. In that sense this is a refreshingly full-bodied listen, without the up-beat tempi, straight-edged strings and honking wind and brass... Read review
