with a performance of the TrialByJury. This was, historically, the genesis of the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership brought together by Richard D?OylyCarte in 1875 to write a short comic opera as a curtain raiser for ?La Périchole? by Jacques Hoffmann. It is the story of a court case, tried for breach of promise. Although lasting barely thirty minutes all the classic Gilbert and Sullivan trademarks are present. Of note is the Judge?s song ?When I Good Friends Was Called To The Bar? (?I am a Judge ? and a Good Judge Too?). There is the typical mixed up logic from the plaintiff and the defendant; and the Judge finally decides that ?he will have to marry her himself?.

Mackerras notes that it was not unusual for Sullivan to recycle motifs himself. The whole work is a good ?music quiz? for Savoyards and the insert booklet identifies the individual sources for when you get stuck.

1871 which resulted in the now lost opera ?Thespis?. In 1875 a budding impresario, Richard D?OylyCarte was looking for a curtain-raiser piece for an Offenbach opera (?La Perichole?). He sent a Gilbert script to Sullivan who agreed to write the music for it and this become ?TrialbyJury?. It was an immediate success. They followed this with ?The Sorcerer?.
