The latest offering from Larry Carlton, Bob James, Nathan East and Harvey Mason will ... more
automatically be dismissed by some critics as smooth jazz, but that would be underselling it. While the surface is certainly glossy, this is ingeniously crafted music with deceptive depths: take, for example, the little pocket of bebop chord changes in "Free Range", or the way bassist East and drummer Mason induce a breathy, almost imperceptible ebb and flow in the Methenyish samba "Double Trouble". Besides, in musical terms "smooth" may also mean "skilfully played" and such is the case here. Even Larry Carlton, who has sounded a little uninvolved in recent years, hits the motherlode on the slow, 14-bar blues "Blues Force". The squeamish might want to pass swiftly over the pillow talk of "A Little Fourplay", but it's a minor indiscretion in a record rich in obvious and hidden delights. --Mark Gilbert

Advantages: Enjoyable, funny, light-hearted, different from other romantic comedies Disadvantages: If you dont like Jim Carrey you wont enjoy it!
Yes Man is a comedy starring Jim Carrey. The film is based on a book by Danny Wallace and basically tells the story of a man who starts to say ?Yes? to every opportunity that comes his way regardless of what it is. Interestingly enough Danny Wallace makes a little appearance sitting at the bar, I knew it was him as I had seen him on Richard and Judy some time ago talking about his book and his experiences of deciding to say yes to every opportunity.
The main character in the film is Carl Allen who is played by Jim Carrey. Carl is a bit of a miserable man, he says no to everything at work and in his personal life. His friends are starting to give up on him because he wont go out with them and makes up lame excuses about why he cant meet them. Then Carl meets an old friend who persuades him to come along to a meeting. Here at this ...

Advantages: It ends eventually Disadvantages: The crude scenes, swearing
I've just had the misfortune of watching Yes Man, and you can probably guess that I was really disappointed.
Synopsis
Carl is a bank clerk in charge of approving or denying loans most of which he denies. After separating from his wife, he has withdrawn into his shell and no longer enjoys the company of his friends. In short he's turned into a grumpy old man, that is until he runs into an old friend whilst he's eating his lunch. His friends tells him of a seminar that's coming up in a few days, which gas changed his life for the better.
The concept is simple, you can improve your life by saying 'yes'. And that's what Carl decides to do, but it's not as easy as it sounds, there are somethings you just want to say no to, the trouble is bad things happen when Carl says no.

Carl Allen is an unhappy man who shies away from alot of things, preferring to spend time with himself. His friend often calls him to invite him out with friends for the night but he wants to avoid running into his ex-wife so he does't take the calls. One day, he's told about a personal development program, which he attends a local seminar on, where they explain that in order to move on and become a happier and more positive person, you have to say yes and not no and good things will come from it. He's quite sceptical at first but his friend encourages him to follow through and it doesn't take long before a number of random events takes place which leads to good things happening in his life, in his personal and work life. Things are looking up for Carl but can it ...

Fourplay: Nathan East (vocals, bass); Bob James (piano); Larry Carlton (guitar); Harvey Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Sherree, Chante Moore (vocals); Ken Freeman (programming). Recorded at Sear Sound and Remidi Sound, New York, New York; Larrabee East, Capitol Studios, and Pyramid Studios, Los Angeles, California. YES, PLEASE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. This is jazz lite, no doubt about it--the four storied musicians who make up Fourplay would be the first to tell you so. But YES, PLEASE is far from the overripe, cloying tones employed by so many "pop jazz" artists. Instead, it's full of subtlety, emotive, carefully considered solo statements, and tunes intended for more than coffee- commercial soundtrack music. Though he contributes the least in terms of original compositions, veteran guitarist Larry Carlton offers some of the most soulful playing here. His warm-but-precise tone is simultaneously organic and cerebral as he improvises over the alternately funky and balladic motifs of the tunes. Keyboardist Bob James provides the same indefatigable blend of catchiness and taste that's made him so successful for decades. The rhythm section of Harvey Mason and Nathan East, who've backed a thousand contemporary jazz artists, keep the rhythms visceral without losing any of the more intimate nuances.
