[Introduction]
I had not heard of Feeder until they released "Echo Park" in 2001, and I was drawn to this band by the cool, upbeat first release from Echo Park; Buck Rogers. After buying Echo Park, and hearing my personal favourites "Seven Days In The Sun", "Tell All Your Friends" & "Under The Weather" I went on to buy Yesterday Went Too Soon. Yesterday Went Too Soon is a mix of hard, rockin' tunes and slow, mellow melodies.

[The Band]
The band consisted (past tense after the tragic death of drummer John Henry Lee)of:

Grant Nicholas - Lead guitar & vocals
Taka Hirose - Bass guitar
[& the late] John Henry Lee - drums

[Discography]
Swim (1996) - 6 Track mini album (Re-release features 5 extra new tracks
Polythene (1998)
Yesterday Went Too Soon (1999)
Echo Park (2001)

[Yesterday Went Too Soon]

~*~ There will be a synopsis of each song, followed by what I think are the most meaningful lyrics, or lyrics people can most relate to in the song ~*~

[01] Anaesthetic 229"
A nice start to a good album. A song with good contrast. The verses are fast paced, and are almost shouted in Nicholas' very distinctive voice - at the chorus the pace slows a little and the singing lightens. The drums and guitars are constantly good throughout. This isn't my personal favourite song, but it's in no way a bad song.

"Cause commitment is so complete
It's burning little holes in me"

[02] Insomnia 174"
I'm not too keen on this song. The vocals and instruments are all of a good standard, but I don't think the lyrics have a personal meaning, they don't deal with love or loss or anything cliché, just someone dealing with insomnia, looking back on the old days of 84 and drinking themselves to sleep - all normal...

"Turning off a switch inside me
Leaving all the stress behind me"

[03] Picture of Perfect Youth 226"
Now this song is REAL. It has not been manufactured like something from Hear'Say or other pop bands of the sort. (Not being biased, and against pop, just sometimes the lyrics lack real meaning) The lyrics of this song have meaning, and are thought provoking, which I think make it one of the best songs on the album. There is also a combination of again the fast-verse slow-chorus that we see from Feeder often. The soft, slow chorus is absolutely brilliant.
I think most people can relate to this song; it's about obsessing over that one you can't stop thinking about - wherever you go.

"It's like breathing underwater
But I just can't let you go"

[04] Yesterday Went Too Soon 164"
The title track, and a great track this is. A song about loving and losing - and holding onto that memory of yesterday -because yesterday went too soon. The guitars, drums, vocals and lyrics are notably brilliant in this song. I think this is the most meaningful track on the album. The pace is slow, and is very 'sad' sounding. Just like the previous song it's bound to spark thoughts and memories.

"A victim of regret
It glitters and it fades away
Like silver turning grey"
&
"Waiting for a taste
Of happiness to lift me free
And carry me away"

[05] Waiting For Changes 164"
Picking up the beat from the two preceding songs. This song is fast, furious and pretty much cool. I'm not sure I understand this song, but it's good anyway. The "shouty" voice is out again from Nicholas. If you're happy this song is for you - if you're depressed; avoid.

"Reality's kicking me
Knocking me right off my feet"

[06] Radioman 217"
Great harmonising in this track - boasting the great vocal talents of all three band members. The lack of guitar usage in this song (or at least very toned down guitar usage) makes this song a lot more relaxed. All in all a good song with well thought lyrics.

"Money doesn't mean that much to him
But maybe another bottle of gin?"

[07] Day In Day Out 218"
This song contradicts Feeder's usual way; fast-verse, slow-chorus - and works in reverse. This is a personal favourite of mine - the lyrics are excellent, and the heavy use of guitars in this song adds an extra touch to it's brilliance, making it that bit better. This song is about life and it's strange ways, and how we live our sometimes pathetic lives day in day out.

[08] Tinsel Town 268"
Mellow, melancholy, all the Ms. Tinsel Town is the ballad of a seventeen year old girl without a care, left pregnant in Tinsel Town (Hollywood) and she's so "Alone, Alone, Alone, so Alone." The slow guitar strumming and the soft singing adds to the sombre atmosphere of this sad track (one of the saddest on the album)

"A fun fair trip a carousel
She's trying to hang on"

[09] You're My Evergreen 203"
Not the best track on the album. I don't like the verses - but I love the music during the lines:
"Cause today it all looks black and white
Wish it would change
We can?t keep painting colours when its"
I know that sounds peculiar, but listen out for the riffs played in those lines - it's great! This song is a feel-good song, another fast one. The vocals and lyrics are OK.
As I mentioned before...

"Cause today it all looks black and white
Wish it would change
We can't keep painting colours when its..."

[10] Dry 265"
Along with "Picture of Perfect Youth" and the title track, this is excellent in many, many ways. Lyrics - exceptionally good, another straight from the heart written song. Vocals - also good. Nicholas' voice shines through on this track. Music - the music is great, slow, I hate to use repetition - but again, another sombre song. It's another lost-love song (or at least that's how I interperet it).

"Reaching out beneath a sea of pain
Riding high on waves of hope again"
&
"Melting in the sun, breathing in the day
Falling into love and climbing out again"

[11] Hole In My Head 178"
The "happiest" tune on the album. Upbeat, fast and as much as I hate to say; You WILL want to dance to this. This will pick you up if you're feeling a little depressed after the sad heartfelt songs. A great lead up to the end of the album. A catchy tune that will stick in your head!

"Smile it all the way
Holding back a thousand lies
But that was yesterday"

[12] So Well 240"
Hmm... so... well... This song is well. It's OK. There are better on the album. I'm not sure if the counting in the song is the years of this person's life (please do correct me if I'm wrong) but it sounds cool. The vocals are also good on this track.

[13] Paperfaces 270?
A lot of people think that this song and the bonus track are one complete song, but this is not true, they are both separate, just it comes under Paperfaces, as it is a "hidden" track. This track is one of the Mellow Melodies, and a good one it is at that. The vocals, the lyrics, the music ? it's all good. A must-listen to.

"If you can learn to be yourself
Then that's okay
If you can find a reason now
Don't drift away"

~*~ Bonus: Secret Hidden Track ~*~

[14] Bubblehead
This track is so weird, it's intriguing. I have no clue what the lyrics mean, but all I know is it sounds great. The music is not typical Feeder which adds to the strangeness. Listen to this hidden track and be amazed how strangely cool it is.

"Pull it back together, heal reflections in our broken bones
We're so ridiculous, we dress it up with smiles and frowns"

This album is not one of the norm. It is different in many ways. I'm pleased Feeder have again avoided cliché songs, and expected music, and instead come up with a brilliantly contrasting album ? with fast paced, adrenaline pumping tracks, and the slow, mellow, meaningful melodies. This is a must-have for Feeder fans, and even for those who have never heard of them!
