Additional notes
Album Notes: YOU & OTHERS, the sophomore effort from the accessible Britpop quartet Vega 4, was released in the U.K. in 2006 and in the U.S. in 2007. Following diligently in the footsteps of Coldplay, Travis, and Snow Patrol, Vega 4 make melodic, hook-filled indie rock with the edges sanded off for maximum appeal. The appearance of the single "Life Is Beautiful" on a couple of popular American TV shows heightened the band's profile in the States, paving the way for the release of YOU & OTHERS. "Life is Beautiful" is here, as is "You and Me," another touted single. Fans of melody-heavy British pop-rock from the '00s will want to give this a listen.
Advantages: Really makes you think Disadvantages: In her own words: a little too worked on
...for Suzanne up until she became 18, and realised she was too rebellious for this - she hated routine, and wouldn't perform if she didn't like the dance teacher! This was when she started to go down the music path, and concentrated on her songwriting and attending auditions. Her first gig was 2 January 1976.
Suzanne's music:

Suzanne Vega's lyrics are more like poetry, and are extremely thought provoking. Her style of music is what I would class of a mix between alternative, rock and folk. She sings in a very soft voice, which I have also heard described as "intimate" I don't really think she can be compared with anyone else, but others have suggested a likeness to Dido, Tracey Chapman, Joan Baez, to name a few…make of that what you will!
If you ever get chance to see her on stage, which I have been very fortunate to have seen her...

Advantages: Great lyricist, this is her best album Disadvantages: Not the best singer ever
.../ And the trembling / Of freeze tag / In the dark".
Whilst she is a wonderfully poetic songwriter, Vega is not an accomplished vocalist. She does not have a fantastic vocal range or very powerful voice, yet this suits her subject matter. A little halting and nervous in her delivery, perhaps a reflection of this being her first album, her voice reflects the issues that she sings about.
This is an amazingly powerful and assured debut album, and is by far the best collection of songs she ever recorded. The only weak link for me is "Neighbourhood Girl", which is less interesting lyrcially and not particularly great melodically either.
However, in every other track in the album, her immense talent shines through and she has a fantastic backing band - the bass lines especially highlight the fragile beauty of her songs.
If you haven't got this album already...

Advantages: Good Songs, Fantastic Lyrics Disadvantages: A Few Weaker Tracks
...One of the things about moving House as frequently as I do is that things tend to get boxed up and forgotten about. Even though I moved into my current House almost a year ago I am still getting around to sorting out some of my stuff. One advantage of this laziness however is that from time to you rediscover something that you had forgotten you owned and in my case I recently stumbled across a whole batch of CD's.
Amongst this hoard was a CD from Suzanne Vega, simply entitled Suzanne Vega. It is hard to believe that this Album was originally released as long ago as 1985.
This CD contains ten tracks as below:
1. Cracking
2. Freeze Tag
3. Marlene on the Wall
4. Small Blue Thing
5. Straight Lines
6. Undertow
7. Some Journey
8. The Queen and the Soldier
9. Knight Moves
10.Neighbourhood Girls
