You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore 2 - Frank Zappa

Advantages: a brilliant 1974 concert with a top notch Zappa band
Disadvantages: not quite the whole gig and the instrumentals may be a little off putting to newcomers

Brock's vocal problems and the dominant track here is a 23 minute "Dupree's Paradise" which at times is just mind boggling. They even play a Finnish tango straight from the music score as they'd not had time to rehearse it. The show ends with a great rendition of "Montana" - where they grow dental floss don't you know - but only after Zappa starts the song three times and gets the band to play it super slow on the third attempt as they don't seem to be able to manage the usual brisk tempo. "What happened to you last night? enquires Zappa of the band amid much laughter. An edited "Big Swifty" concludes the disc on a high, pity the whole track wasn't included though. On the whole, it's a marvellous example of complex jazz inflected rock, plus some genuinely funny lyrics, tricky time signatures, complex keyboards and amazing guitar playing ...

I'll give you an Offer You can't Refuse with this book!

Advantages: Great read with good characters! :)
Disadvantages: None for me.

for Doug, he is the love of her life, but she is willing to give that up just to help out her step father. Lola is a wonderful character, although a little obsessed with Doug, and always trying to get close to him, and not been able to persuade him she didn?t take the money for her own good. The story is told by three people, in the third person, all three of the main characters have their own chapters, Lola is the main character and has the most chapters, but there are the odd chapter by Sally and also Gabe telling their stories as they happen. This means we get their point of view on matters, as well as hearing their stories when Lola isn?t around. The plot is great; it?s believable and has just enough twists and turns to keep you interested in it. Price & Availability You can get this book from most good bookstores ...

STUCK IN A RUT YOU CAN'T GET OUT OF

Advantages: a few good songs
Disadvantages: very unadventurous, lacks ambition

U2 made their name in the 1980's with albums such as the 'Joshua Tree' and 'War'. They wrote earnest, epic sounding rock with a social and political conscience. However, their relevance in the 90's became more questionable in the 1990's as they found themselves sidelined in favour of less clean living and more exciting rock bands such as Guns and Roses and later Nirvana. U2 responded in a way nobody expected. They embraced dance music, irony and conceptualism. They produced the groundbreaking 'Acthung Baby' and later the flawed but fascinating 'Pop' and 'Zooropa' where dance and rock collided.
