Advantages: Fantastic first album
Disadvantages: Somewhat cliched themes

...To Lose Your Keys". More strong lyrics and the same old theme of being let down by a girl. Containing a fantastic corus: "It's girls like you that make me think I'm better off home on a Saturday night with all my doors locked up tight" Brand New are singing what all boys must have thought at some point in their lives. "Logan To Government Center" is a great song which connects nicely with "Jude Law And A Semester Abroad" and deals with long distance relationships. This is a nice link and certainly adds to the album. "No Seatbelt Song" is possibly the best song on this album, slightly slower and more calm - again it shows why Brand New are so fantastic. It is beautifully song and has some of the best lyrics on the album for example "perfect eyes will have perfect hate" and "I shot the pilot, now I'm begging you to fly this for me... Read review

Advantages: loud, brilliant, upbeat, pure genius perhaps
Disadvantages: a little on the short side, if you dislike loud music chances are you won't like the Hives

...Okay - so the title is a little lame. But heck, I'm only the second person to write about 'Your New Favourite Band' and the title just seemed apt. I've bought several cd's of late, some old, some new, and of all of the cd's I have purchased, I find it is The Hives who are back in my cd player again and again. When I first played the cd, my sister (she of no discernible musical taste) asked what that 'noise' was. When I responded, and quite enthusiastically I might add, that that 'noise' was my new favourite band, she simply gave me a withering look and asked if I could kindly keep it down, if not actually change the cd. I probably could see my sister's point of view. Your New Favourite Band is definitely a very 'loud' album. Loud drums are a prominent feature, the vocalist does not so sing so much as shout and the pace... Read review

Advantages: Beautiful, haunting music for cello; enough to convert me to a Beiser's fan!
Disadvantages: Not that I can recognise

...him to compose a piece for cello based on the rhythm and form of Gamelan. Clearly, he accepted and the piece, in keeping with the Reich theme, was like many of Reich's 'counterpoints', being pieces originally recorded as CD fillers that then became a part of his repertoire. Each piece is multitracked, a solo performer recording each part individually then playing live accompanied by the multitracked performances already recorded. This was the form of the piece played for free by Maya Beiser at the Barbican that day. Why this introduction? Well, first off I was surprised the extent to which I enjoyed the performance; secondly, because the music on World to Come is mostly multitracked. The performances are all by Maya Beiser and each contain the same haunting beauty that accompanied Beiser's performance the first time I saw her... Read review
