You weren’t there in the beginning, man. You don’t remember sitting in front of MTV one day, watching Zane, the chin-stroking “v-jay” of Brand New extolling the virtues of a Swedish 5 piece band, whose video featured them sitting in front of an electric fire with way ... Read review

Your New Favourite Band -
Your New Favourite Bandis one cocky album: a greatest hits of album tracks and B-sides ... more
five years into The Hives' career and a title that demands your adulation. The music's no less cocky, with these five Swedes playing bubble-gum metal with the self-assured swagger that only the truly narcissistic rock&roll stars can muster. This batch of glorious guitar romps displays an allegiance to the punk snarl of the New York Dolls, the power pop immediacy of Cheap Trick and the riotous rock of Metallica. There's absolutely nothing new about The Hives, then, but that's the point. Joyously, they reach back to the roots of rock excess with a pop sensibility that every aspiring band in the world craves. This band has that rare alchemy that takes the basic ingredients of rock&roll and makes them sound vital all over again.Your New Favourite Bandcloses with "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime": cocky, but deservedly so. --Ben Clancy
Advantages: It's only rock 'n' roll, but I like it. Disadvantages: Couple of weak tracks. Might already own material.
...faces. You don’t remember spilling your bubble & squeak down your lap because you had to get up and ROCK (pronounced RAAAAWRK!) to the Stones/New York Dolls/punk related tune belting out of the stereo speakers on your 2nd hand TV. You never went out and bought the band’s album “Veni Vidi Vicious” because nowhere was stocking the single, which didn’t even go Top 40. No, this was the time when ROCK was in a period of transgression, ... ...name since Rat Scabies (ask your mum - if she liked punk).
***THE CD***
Not actually a new album from the guys in black, but rather a compilation of b-sides and album tracks from “Barely Legal” and “Veni…” which was a bit annoying for your faithful reviewer, seeing as I already own the latter record. Still, I did get 7 brand spanking new tracks (to my ears), plus 4 videos (more later), so not too unhappy a Benny after ...

Thrashy freaks Review ofYour New Favourite Band [ECD] - Hives (The)by

Advantages: Good foot tappers on here Disadvantages: Mostly thrashy rubbish with repetitive tracks
...stuck in the 60's with your dress and music, the Hives and The White Stripes are a unique quantity. They look every part the Black and White dressed mods that toured around during that time with their sharp suits and clothes.
But what about their music?
Here I am going to talk about the Hive's album, Your New Favourite Band.
However, who the hell are the Hives?
Well, they originate from Sweden and are a unique sounding hard rock/indie band with ... ...me and one most of your radio listeners will recognise. A very bright lively song to open the album and one that sets the scene for their unique sound and one that that is a great example of what they sound like.
They are musically very simple songs to play along to if you are a guitarist so it shows that they are not exactly mozart in the song writing skills. However, its how they have put together these simple chords into a great song.
For those ...

My New Favourite Band Review ofYour New Favourite Band [ECD] - Hives (The)by
arcadionseyes
Advantages: loud, brilliant, upbeat, pure genius perhaps Disadvantages: a little on the short side, if you dislike loud music chances are you won't like the Hives
...sister's point of view. Your New Favourite Band is definitely a very 'loud' album. Loud drums are a prominent feature, the vocalist does not so sing so much as shout and the pace of every song is phenomenal (so much so that the album lasts a very, by normal standards at least, meagre 28 minutes and 19 seconds despite there actually being 12 songs on the album) but I don't think I could describe how well it all works together. This is the kind of ... ...you really wanted to scare your mum for example, then play this very, very loud.
8. Here We Go Again
Probably my least favourite of all the songs on the cd, this one is quite slow and repetitive (it's still quite fast though) and I suppose this is probably one of the weaker songs.
9. A.K.A I-D-I-O-T
I love this song. It's very fast, got very loud drums, and you really have to respect someone who can sing/shout I-D-I-O-T so fast with apparently ...

Advantages: Infectious songs that make you feel you can take on the world Disadvantages: There is a feel that the songs are too similar
...my way, I will boot your insignificant arse into next Tuesday".
It's a definate mission statement for the rest of the album. There are no slow songs to drag down the momentous thrust which carries right until the end leaving you either ready to take on the world or collapsed on the floor after screaming and jumping to their infectious beat.
However, I shall review the album song by song and conclude at the end.
1.Hate To Say I Told You So
An ... ...great beat that makes you scream its punchy words and jump up and down like a mad man! I've had many a drunken night with a bottle in my hand screaming 'hate to say i told you sooooooo, alright, come on!' If this doesn't get you going, you should be taken to hospital.
2. Main Offender
Once again an incredibly good song. I had an argument with my mate as to which of this and the previous song we should play in our band. I won, preferring HTSITYS ...

Advantages: Fresh, new, bags of talent and energy, good, real rock Disadvantages: Some duff tracks, dangerous drift between skatepunk and greeb sometimes
...stunning band, and they deserve your interest.
So, what made me decide this? How about a track by track explanation?
1 - Hate To Say I Told You So - astonishingly catchy, amazing guitar work, full of bounce.
2 - Main Offender - the reason I switched off last time. A little tuneless, but still some good guitar work, but some good rock nevertheless.
3 - amazing intro, thumping drums, lyrics don't make a whole lot of sense, verses are good, chorus ... ...McGee's new record label, Poptones, and this album is basically a 12 track advert for the label. Still, it's a good album, and so I'll certainly be out to buy the two 'proper' albums, Veni Vid Vicious, and Barely Legal.
The Hives - your new favourite band? Could be... ...

Album Notes: British import compilation of early singles and B-sides. In the wake of the New Rock windfall led by the Strokes and the White Stripes, some listeners might have guessed that the Hives were just another one of the hordes of bands that accompany every Next Big Thing. In fact, the group had already been slugging it out for nearly a decade in their home country of Sweden, slowly developing a devoted cadre of admirers. A mix of 1960s beat/mod-group manic energy and trashy Sex Pistols aggression delivered with lead vocalist Howlin' Pelle Almquist's trademark Iggy Pop-meets-Mick Jagger snarl, the quintet's music is unique among their skinny-tied, shaggy-haired brethren. YOUR NEW FAVOURITE BAND is the best place for newcomers to start, as it includes the biggest hits from the Hives' breakthrough VENI VIDI VICIOUS ("Main Offender," "Hate to Say I Told You So"), as well as tracks from the band's earlier albums and singles.
