Advantages: Well, it's rather good Disadvantages: A few indeciferable things
....
For unquestionable proof of this, look no further than the album's searing, grandiose opening, 'In Your Honor.' Never, I think, have I ever found a song that is at once monstrous and magnificent as this one here. A vast, unseenpower exudes from the mere wiff of feedback that opens the song, the opening chords descending and rising like a phoenix, Grohl's voice defines passion as he belts "Can you HEAR MEEE!?!?!... Me SCREA-MIIING!!!!!!" Scream he truly does, but his abrasive yells soar like an eagle, the guitars taking flight with him, surging, writhing in a cesspool of inhuman glory. I cannot describe it. It is the most beautiful wall of complete noise I've ever heard.
Lead single 'Best of You' has somehow almost managed to match 'Honor' in its epic nature, in its simultaneous ferocity and artfulness. I really felt it to be slightly disappointing...

Advantages: Rock, Roll and Revel in Cat Power's stunning vocals Disadvantages: The last track is oh so poorly recorded
...– oh yes then “…and where do the dreams of babies gone?” and though Cat Power seems to change so little vocally she seems to really pull out the tension, string it tight and taut. Somehow the words mirror the tension and yet I cannot quite say why. It’s just one of those musical epiphanies. But I can tell you that this song is what music is designed for. The sort of song that you just put on repeat. What is different from the rest of the album? Errrr, don’t know. Next question. It’s a matter of effect and Rockets just gets it right. The guitar work, the drumming hits the right pitch and volume. Power seems to know just when to put that little bit extra into her vocals and when to let it rest easier and glide. OK, there’s a couple of nice guitar riffs in there, simple, but good. Honest, almost. “…help keep your momma safe. She...

Advantages: One of the most AMAZING albums you'll ever hear Disadvantages: Almost none
...toprogress or lack cultural relevance should listen to this album. It is not the kind of music you put on in for a casual listen, a gentle bit of relaxation for going to bed (ok, you might but only if you’re out and out tense and require a battering ram to knock you into sleep). There is so much going on in the album that it is an absolute wonder to think that there are only four musicians playing; they manage to create a deeper, more polyphonic sound than on Thrak that also had the might of Tony Levin and Bill Bruford added to the ranks.
I came to The Power to Believe wondering quite how it was going to sound. After having heard almost half the album in live form on CD before hand I was dreading ripping back the cellophane to discover a slightly anaemic album unable to compete with their live greatness. I was not disappointed. Why...
