When I read reviews in major newspapers (Guardian in this case) and music magazines (NME in this case) and listen to an album like this I wonder if indeed we are all from the same planet.
Firstly, loved the last album Employment and went and saw them play live at Alexandra Palace where they were very good. While I wasn't a die hard fan it was obviously a good album and had some great tracks. This isn't.
"Yours Truly Angry Mob" sounds like a title for a really great album, but it never materialises. I figure the only people who will be truly angry with this are the record executives who pay the bills.
The songs just don't happen. I am not trying to sound amateurish however they just have no tune, its the kind of music you can put on and actually not realise music is playing, it is so bland. That sounds harsh written down but kind of sums it up for me, i have listened to it a few times not wanting to repeat a mistake where I previously wrote off "Gansta's Paradise by Coolio" before it really struck me, and this I am pretty sure won't have that type of Lazarus like recovery.
Some reviewers are raving about it lyrically and there are some nice lyrics in their but if they have something to say - write a book, if they want to be a rock and roll band, then better write some better music.
"I can do without you" is probably my favourite track. "Everything is average" starts well but then just fizzles out. "The angry mob" will probably grow on me as well.
First single "Ruby" brought the release to my attention as it was number one in the iTunes download chart so I thought it must have a bit of something to be up there - sadly not
"Boxing Champ" sounds like it might be an ok track, a bit different from the rest of the album but it finishes after 1m31s - before it even gets going.
Summing it all up I'd say this sounds like lots of album tracks with no singles. There is nothing that makes you want to press repeat, or turn the volume up to 11, or even bring it up in conversation with Leeds United fans. Perhaps the Kaiser Chiefs have been knocked off their game the same time as their beloved team.
Save your money - or even better by Arcade Fire album Neon Bible released next month (6th March).
