This is a truely beautiful album and shows Newsom's musical advancement from her earlier albums.
Throughout this album, Newsom plays her harp brilliantly, providing a beautiful, melodic background to her sometimes haunting voice. This CD only contains five tracks but each one is quite long and beautiful in its own way.
Joanna Newsom's voice and style may not be appealing to some people, however this album has seen great advancement in the control she has over her voice, making her sound, on one hand more commercial, on the other softer and more easy-listening.
The poetry in these songs is both heart-warming and touching and her skill as a harpist is undeniable.
Joanna Newsom truely provides a sound which had previously been unavilable in popular music. Haunting, touching and sometimes childlike in her voice, Newsom has been criticised for her youthful voice, although in my opinion this adds to her charm and makes her sound more appealing as in some way it appears more honest.
Ys is an outstanding album as it is rare to hear such innocence and intelligence so beautifully entwined in popular culture.
Worth a listen!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Looking around the site would take some time, and it's pretty hard to get inspiration and ideas for a review about a bonkers harpist so - I think all you need to add to your review to make it more helpful are a few details about the tracks, which ones you like, why you like them, things like that. Get that down, and your review will be more helpful and you'll get better ratings.
