Young recorded with Crazy Horse, Zuma certainly qualifies as a close third. Recorded in 1975, Zuma exudes both a sense of focus and a tentative optimism, two qualities that were completely MIA from the bleak Time Fades Away/Tonight's the Night/On the Beach trilogy that preceded it. "Barstool Blues", "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Drive Back" are terse, punchy rockers, while "Danger Bird" and "Cortez the Killer" are extended guitar work-outs in the grand Crazy Horse tradition. And the two acoustic entries--"Pardon My Heart" and "Through My Sails" (the latter was recorded with Crosby, Stills & Nash)--are absolutely gorgeous. Ignore the terrible cover art, and treat yourself to one of Young's most underrated records. --Dan Epstein

This album serves as a decent intro into the world of NeilYoung but considering how there is little from later albums like Sleeps With Angels, Broken Arrow, This Notes For You or Life I would recommend the double disc of Decade which features more songs and spans his time with Buffalo Springfield...

Advantages: energy, rock, commitment, tracks Disadvantages: sound level, distortion
...Recorded at the Cow Palace, San Francisco in the early 90's NeilYoung and CrazyHorse are at the peak of their profession.
Weld opens with a most powerful rendition of ''hey, hey,my, my,'' then almost slides into ''crime in the city'' but with the same distorted gibson les paul he plays throughout the show as opposed to a more subdued version on
Youngs energy is contagious - Sampedro, Talbot and Molina are in awe, not to mention the audience.
This double dvd is a must - electric and not an acoustic string in the house - with tracks such as cinnamon girl, rockin' in the freeworld and love to burn this is actually a journey or as Mr Young would say - ''it's all one song''...

Advantages: The best album from his most successful decade Disadvantages: Everything else stops when this album goes on
...extensively in the preceding months (on the “Live Rust” tour, the album of which was released five months after this one. Four of these tracks also make it to the successor album). The polish afforded by Young’s punishing schedule is captured on this blistering album. This album is also noteworthy for reuniting Young with his sometime backing band, CrazyHorse, for the first time since 1975’s acclaimed “Zuma”.
It is notable with this record that Young’s technique of juxtaposing simple acoustic strummers with festivals of feedback and distorted electric guitars has been revised slightly. The beautific and stripped down numbers are present in what can be described as the first half of the album (side one, we oldies still tend to consider it); while the second half of the album presents Young and CrazyHorse...
