This is the third album from the inspired American art-rock band A Perfect Circle. It was released in time for the last American election in a bid to encourage voters to vote out George Bush. Although sadly (in my opinion) this did not work, I do not feel that it was a total waste of time as it is still a very decent album in its own right!
It comprises of mostly covers of anti war songs throughout recent times, most famously John ... ...band wrote themselves and featured on the recent movie "Constantine". (For those who have seen the film it is the song that is on in the night club) Also there is "Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums", which is basically the song "Pet" from "Thirteenth Step" with a lot of the music taken away. For my money that is the only song that needs to be skipped!

Although sadly (in my opinion) this did not work, I do not feel that it was a total waste of time as it is still a very decent album in its own right!
It comprises of mostly covers of anti war songs throughout recent times, most famously John Lennon's "Imagine". An exception to this being "Passive" which the band wrote themselves and featured on the recent movie "Constantine". (For those who have seen the film it is the song that is on in the night club) Also there is "Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums", which is basically the song "Pet" from "Thirteenth Step" with a lot of the music taken away. For my money that is the only song that needs to be skipped!
The main thing I like about this album is its diversity, there is a much wider range of styles of music than the other two. From the all vocal "Fiddle and the Drum" to the ambient and peaceful "when the Levee Breaks" and the heavy rock of "Freedom of Choice" If you have the other two albums it is a similar change between "Emotive" and "Thirteenth Step" as it was between "Thirteenth Step" and "Mer de Noms", and if you have the other two it is well worth adding to your collection, in fact it is well worth adding to any CD collection.
In this CD they seem to have gone more to the art side of art rock but they bring the rock back in songs like "Freedom of choice" and "Passive", but the main thing to me is the fact that whether it be heavy or slow, the majority of the songs are good! It did take me quite a long time to get into this CD, possibly longer than "Thirteenth Step", but it was well worth it. If you have never owned an "A Perfect Circle" CD before then this might not be the one for you, it all depends on your musical taste. You may find this CD in the "metal" section in a lot of music stores, but if you are looking for a heavy album or a more mainstream rock CD, then Mer de Noms is your best bet.
So all in all I think it is definitely well worth buying (as are the other two), but don't be put off if you don't like it instantly it takes some getting used to as the style is quite different. If you don't already own an APC album I would recommend you buy Mer de Noms.
Thanks for taking the time to read my first ever review!
Advantages: Good vocals, Powerful lyrics. Disadvantages: Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step were better. Can be bland in places.
...Maynard James Keenan's outstanding voice. eMOTIVe is an album released in reaction to the war in Iraq, and it is an intelligent mix of previous anti-war songs by various artists, with a few original tracks. It is mostly covers of well known tracks, and I did not find it to be anything remarkable. This is an interesting band to look into, but I would reccommend potential buyers to either look into other albums by A Perfect Circle, though this album ... ...Rythm of the War Drums', Overall it is a thought-provoking, skillfully organised, and ear-pleasing effort, though existing fans may feel slightly let-down as eMOTIVe doesn't have the charisma of its predecessors.

Album Notes
A Perfect Circle: Billy Howerdel (vocals, guitar, harmonium); Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Danny Lohner (guitar, bass guitar); James Iha (guitar, programming); Paz Lenchantin (piano); Jeordie White (bass guitar); Josh Freese (drums). Recording information: 2004. For EMOTIVE, their third full-length album, A Perfect Circle offers up a covers-heavy collection that includes a number of protest songs. What's most striking about this set is the way in which the group reworks pop classics. In the hands of frontman Maynard James Keenan and company, John Lennon's "Imagine" becomes a foreboding lament, and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is transformed into an oddly soothing, nearly ambient song. Other standout tracks include a lullaby-like, electronics-laced take on Depeche Mode's "People Are People" and a gently melodic version of "When the Levee Breaks" (almost totally unrecognizable from Led Zeppelin's revered rendition). EMOTIVE also presents two APC originals--the frustration-venting "Passive" and the scathing "Counting Bodies like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums." Although a few tracks feature amped-up arrangements, it's remarkable how many of these tunes are subdued and understated, further backing up A Perfect Circle's status as a dynamic, unpredictable band.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.107) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[They] revisit classic protest hits, jacking up the terror by throwing out iconic arrangements and performing heretical surgery on the melodies."
Spin (p.117) - "[T]he band seems dedicated to big challenges....A Perfect Circle prove that they've got not only good taste, but real bite, too." - Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly (p.80) - "Sweetly morbid dreams of a better world abound on this politically motivated release..." - Grade: B+
Mojo (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]pplying minimalist melodies and hypnotic rhythms to a repertoire that seems collectively absurd, but is woven together by the band's singular sonic worldview."
Uncut (p.138) - 4 stars out of 5 -"Unexpectedly impressive, like a 2004 equivalent of Randy California's similarly motivated masterpiece, SPIRIT OF '76."
