This is the recording of that production – numerous other recordings of the stage version of 42nd Street exist, but this is the first and the best. Not all of the songs were written for the original film: about half are borrowed from other films of the 1930s and even the big hit, 'Lullaby of Broadway', actually comes from a different source, Gold Diggers ...
...so including the recording of 42nd Street's recent revival. The disc opens with an overture which includes strains of the familiar 'We're in the Money' before opening out to include a huge troupe of tap dancers. On stage, this must have been an incredible sight, and even on disc, the sound of all those dancing feet is truly incredible. ...With Johnny Depp playing Sweeney Todd and Helena Bonham Carter playing Mrs Wilhemina Lovett, you can't go wrong. Depp's singing voice is so husky and gritty, so well suited for the part, where as Carter's singing voice is somewhat sweet and innocent for the most part, it really gives the character a twist. This amazing soundtrack includes 20 great tracks recorded by the actual cast! When we heard Johnny Depp would be doing his own singing on the tracks, we were unsure as to how attuned his vocal chords were, but as it has become evident with the soundtrack and the film, his voice is just right for the part! The best 3 tracks of the soundtrack are Johanna, By the sea and not forgetting, the soon to be classic, A little priest, which is the comical pinnacle ... Read review

I recently reviewed the film Love Actually in which I wrote of what a great film, I thought it was, and that it was different in the way that there were so many stories going on all at one, however it did not make it confusing in any way, shape or form. One of the other reasons, what makes Love Actually a great film is the soundtrack. A film can be great, however without the right songs in the appropriate places, it can actually spoil the film. ...
...within the film, majority of them being very well known, which makes it even better if you know the song, you are more likely to associate yourself with the film more and appreciate it.
